Because it is a major thoroughfare into Chapel Hill, the Chapel Hill/Carrboro branch of the NAACP wants to rename Airport Road Martin Luther King Boulevard. There already is a Martin L. King Street in Chapel Hill, but some people claim King deserves better recognition than a street many people don't know exists. Where do you stand in this debate?

Wright Avenue would be more appropriate or Rockwell Avenue (Kiffin Rockwell ? WWI) or McConnell Avenue ( James R. McConnell ? WWI) or we have a number in the Carolinas Aviation Hall of Fame that would do.

Bigots hate the idea, but most conservatives do, the same people that prevented Blacks from voting until 1964, the same ones that kept the military segregated until 1947, the same ignorant hated filled fools that kept blacks from having opportunity. I can see it grating in there posts here!

I think we should name the road after the Klu Klux Klan, because wouldn?t it be great to drop all the bigots from 5,000 feet and see if they can fly?

Ronald Reagan was an actor who helped destroy pensions, single handedly created the Homeless Generation, created the greatest debt and just happened to be in office when the PLAN to out spend the USSR set forth by Harry Truman and later expanded by Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon etc bore fruit.

Rename a disease after Reagan like Alzheimers, Ronald Reagans Disease.

Martin Luther King helped to spread equality, a hallmark of America. He tried to right the wrongs by the RIGHT and other conservative beasts. He was braver than most all that fight in WARS and DIED so tens of millions could be free for real! He did more for humanity than many of us who received multiple decorations in any war. I remember people trying to raise flags from half staff when he died.

Martin gave hope to Americans who were maligned, beaten, enslaved, murdered, denied basic rights, segregated from opportunity and he died for it.

Even Jesus was not maligned from Birth for the mere color of his skin, but then an Airport road might best be served with someone in the Carolina Aviation Hall of Fame!

The recognition of MLK is disproportionate to the recognition of numerous other men and women who have contributed to the well being of the citizens of the United States. Franklin Roosevelt lead an effort that saved the free world. Ronald Reagan lead the victory that ended the cold war and freed Eastern Europe from the hands of communists. We have MLK day but we have President's Day. Surely Abraham Lincoln and George Washington deserve individual days of equal honor. Why don't we rename MLK day as Black Heroes Day and name a street as Black Heroes Blvd. Then we can also do a Latin Heroes Blvd and an Asian Heroes Blvd. Isn't it time that those whose identity is tied to MLK get on with it and get their own current day and time identity? Who is going to be the hero to restore fatherhood to the black family? Who is the hero that is going replace the poor example that so many rappers and sports figures have become? Who is the hero that is going to show young people that they have an identity outside of a gang? Who is the hero that is going to show a single parent mother that she doesn't need to enter a house full of drunken college students to do suggestive dancing to survive? If we could ask MLK what he would want people to do, I am confident that naming a street or a day after him would not be on the list.

Lets' be practical here. If the Martin famly pays for the construction of the road or, highway, we should name the highway MLK. Otherswise, name it Peter Pan, he could fly!!

why? he is not the only person to do anything to help. we lost presidents day and got mlk day, a street in every town is mlk, what about the unsung heros that fought for our country, not the ones who marched in the streets. he wasnt the only man with a dream. and how did we loose presidents day in honor of many people to have mlk for only one.doesnt seem fair. air port road should be air port road.

MLK is already a street named in the city of raleigh. I sort of like airport road it's a help to people lost in the roads around the airport. talking from experience.

No! No! No! How about Albert Einstein Dr? Or Charles Darwin Rd? They've done much more for advancing the human race.

How come every MLK road in every city runs through the ghetto? Was that planned? That must make MLK turn over in his grave. How about trying to improve your life instead of wasting money on buying more "bling" for your car or getting the latest rap cd?

Yes, I think we should definitely spend $16,000 to change road signs just so we can have yet another road named after MLK. Sure, let the little children starve, but by golly, we'll have a road named after MLK! Another one, I might add!

No. I'm not racist, but enough is enough. There is a road in every city named MLK. Why. I'm not going by his color and yes he did do a great job to bring together a diversified country. He's talked about in schools/education, remembered in the month of February, and seen everywhere. Why should a street in every city be named after one man. Leave the street names alone and concentrate more on your children and their future, not about some streets name

How far are we willing to go? If this is done, will the Emergency Vehicles be able to find you if you were on this road? I can hear them now,..."Which MLK Road?"

Come on people, let's let MLK, Elvis, and ET RIP!

Humans will be humans with or without a higher power.

No. How does naming a road honor someone like Dr. King? Why not make a statue, or maybe set aside one day out of the year to .... oh well, both have been done before, haven't they?! How about we just try to follow the dream of Dr. King, wouldn't that be the best way to truly honor him? Better than naming some stretch of asphalt after him. I can think of many other more noble and practical things to name after Dr. King.

Churches, hospitals, Non-profit orgs are just three and would carry more respect than some old well traveled road! Leave the road as is and let 'em come up with something better!
