South Portland's new mayor, James Soule, said he wants South Portland and other communities to secede from Maine and become a 51st state. We invite you to share your thoughts on this topic.

In his recent inaugural address, Mayor Soule made the statement that the city of South Portland and its neighbors should leave the state of Maine. Soule also described the Maine State Government as an, "oppressive regime that withholds the communities' rightful amount of state aid."

I'm not going to deny the fact that the State of Maine has its issues with the war in Iraq, taxes, education, economy...etc. However, do you, the People of Maine want to satisfy the shortcomings of the Maine State Government with secession?? [Secession = The STATE of MAINE dissolved into two states?] I don?t. Mayor, as an outraged citizen of this fine state, I demand your resignation.

THIS MAY BE WHAT IT TAKES. I WOULDN'T EXPECT THE GOV'S OFFICE TO SAY ANYTHING ELSE. A MOVE LIKE THIS WOULD CERTAINLY BE COUNTER PRODUCTIVE TO THE BACK BREAKING TAX COLLECTING MACHINE THAT'S IN PLACE. SOMEBODY HAS TO COME UP WITH SOMETHING. WHEN OUR TAX COMMITTEE REMOVES THE 5% SALES TAX FROM OUT OF STATE WARRANTY COMPANIES AND SHIFTS THAT LOSS OF REVENUE BURDEN TO THE CITIZENS OF MAINE WITHOUT EXPLANATION... SOMETHING IS VERY BROKEN.

Imagine that. Yankees embracing the concept of secession. My how things change.

Wishing you the best of luck, A Mississippian
