Mario Lemieux is saying again that time is running out to build a new arena and keep the Penguins in Pittsburgh.
Under the Pens' deal with Isle of Capri Casinos, Mellon Arena would be replaced with a new, privately built facility if the gaming company is granted a slots license in Pittsburgh.
What do you think? Does Pittsburgh need a new arena, or is the current Igloo OK?
What about the surrounding areas? What would you like to see -- shopping, apartments, parks, etc. -- near a new arena?

Remember when Pittsburgh drafted Troy from USC he had a lot of concussins and that was one of the primary concerns of the Steelers. This could be one of the major stopping blocks for negotiating Troy's new contract. He sat out a few games last year an previous years. I am not critizing the part of the concussions, but the league is getting on hard about this situation, but Troy is and always be a great football player destined for the HOF. The Steelers were blessed in which to be able to accept this kind of player

It's not whether the Pens need a new facility, it is that the tax paying population of Pittsburgh needs a "First Class" facility to provide a venue for major entertainment. The current facility, Mellon Arena provides seating for approximately 2,000,000(200 events x 10,000 ave.) taxpayers per year, that's more than Heinz Field and more than PNC Park. The variety of taxpayers is much, much greater than the exclusive groups that attend only football and baseball games, so build a "Taj Mahal" for the taxpayers of Pittsburgh. Let's be proud when the "out of town" conventioners rave about what a wonderful facility Pittsburgh has; when the selection committee for March Madness thinks that Pittsburgh has the best venue to showcase NCAA basketball; when the Entertainment Industry thinks that Pittsburgh is a "must stop" for Top Notch entertainment. And who do you think will be sitting in those seats, the taxpayers of Pittsburgh, enjoying their taxdollars at work. Wake up Pittsburgh, the new arena is not for the Pens, it's for us, let's enjoy it.

Well, I don't want to be there on the day you guys are reporting how the igloo fell down and killed or injured thousands. The upkeep of the leaks and other areas of danger is getting too costly for the arena. So yea its time for a new igloo.

What we need are sports venues with DECENT PARKING that doesn't cost an arm and a leg, and DECENT FOOD that doesn't go to subsidize some union drone. C'mon, $5 for a beer or hot dog? Between that and the pro athletes striking whenever they feel out of sorts ($2 million a year isn't enough, Waaaaaaaah) they can all move to Cleveland!!!

I don't know what Pens games you've been too, but my husband and I are season ticket holders and every game we have gone to this season has either been a sell-out or a near sell-out.
Dedicated Pittsburgh Penguins Fan til the end!!!

hockeypat: Please city of Pgh and Mario, think of what can is lost here, the fan base is young and the future for many years.Think of your children Mario who are living here and playing hockey, think of all of the youth hockey teams in the Pgh area who are here because of the role model Mario set all the kids who want to follow in the footsteps of the Nhl player they most admire and respect. Without you here Mario the teams have no one to want to be like to follow their leader instead the hours days weeks months they practice may end up on the street or dead with a needle in their arm. Mario as a grandmother of a possible hockey star give the men in office one more chance to try and do what should have been done years ago when all their promises turned into lies. We need the Penguins here not only for your fans but for the future of all our children. I pray God helps all of you make the correct choice.

First and formost, how can ANY sport team hold a state appointed board hostage to their demands? Yes, I would love to see the Penguins stay in the Burgh. No, I have no idea if the board members were bought off with perks. Yes, I wonder if placing an establishment with the potential to draw an 'unsavory' element so close to the Science Center is wise. And, NO, I do not believe that either the City or County government officials have some sinister and underhanded agenda to drag the area into a cesspool of crime and fiscal crisis. It is a nightmare to try to travel towards downtown when there is an event at the current arena. South Side's streets and parking were never designed to accomodate the kind of traffic that Station Square currently garners when there is an event there or any weekend night. At least the North Shore traffic patterns move along at a smoother pace than either of the other two locations. So the lease that the Penguins has with the Arena expires this coming summer - was Isle of Capri going to have their construction ready by then? Everyone is always so ready to jump down the throat of the plan that offers the most far-reaching solution when considering future impact on local resources; especially if the 'other' plan SEEMS to offer more money. The future, ONLY, will tell which plan was the best. And to the comments that alluded to, or just plain outright accused, racial prejudice - Wake up, this is 2006 - not 1946! If Don Barden affords jobs and opportunities to people of color, good for him. I'll bet no-one handed him ANYTHING on a silver platter! ~ From a Caucasian with Vision
Respectfully, Love the Burgh
