There is no one better that deserves the student athlete of the week award then Yough's Ben Hoffer. A 5'5 senior, Hoffer is averaging over 100 yards a game in the 2008 season. He is on track for his second 1,000 yard season. Hoffer was held under 100 yards only twice this season out of 5 games. Against Laurel Highlands, he rushed for over 230 yards. In the 2007 season finale he rushed for a school record of 401 yards. Hoffer is also excelent in academics. With a 4.0 GPA, he his taking many AP and advanced classes. I think it would be great to bring this award back to Yough. Hoffer is a great kid with high athletic and academic ability.

I would like to nominate Brandon Tardio for the Student-Athlete Of The Week. Brandon was a four year starter for the Brashear Baseball Team. He has dedicated himself to the team. Brandon lost in the city championship to Carrick on 5-30-07. He was injured in the second inning after his knee gave out when rounding 3 for an in the park homerun. Brandon pitched against Alderdice High School and went all 7 innings and winning 6-3 against what the post gazette called an unbeatable team. He had also hit a grand slam against Perry with 7 RBI's and pitched that game to give them a 12-1 win.

Devin Mesoraco, Punxsutawney High School
I would like to nominate Devin Mesoraco for WTAE Athlete of the Week. Devin is one of the most talented baseball players (athletes) ever to attend our high school. He was recently selected as the 2006/2007 Gatorade Pennsylvania Baseball Player of the Year. He is receiving a great deal of attention from professional scouts as the June baseball draft approaches. He truely is one of the top high school baseball prospects in America. If he does not pursue professional baseball at this time, he is committed to the University of Virginia for baseball and academic studies. He is a leader on our team and his statisitics are consistent with his ability. Above his baseball skills, are his academic abilities and his everyday attitude/approach to life. He will graduate with honors from our high school on June 15, 2007. He treats everyone with respect and has handled all of his success, recognition and attention with poise and gratitude. Devin Mesoraco is everything that a student athlete should be. Please consider him for WTAE Athlete of the Week. Thank you!

I?d like to nominate Tom Burkett from Yough HS for student athlete of the week. It?s been years since I?ve seen someone with his speed and athletic ability. He is an All-Star baseball and football player. But most importantly he is a nice kid. He tutors in math, helps with the mentor program, yearbook and student council. He?s an excellent role model for underclassman and is a team leader as a 2 yr captain in baseball and a captain in football. He would be an excellent selection for student athlete of the week.
