The Allegheny Conference on Community Development announced plans to study how the city and the county could come together and discuss what financial problems such a merger would solve.

In the short term, suggestions for next year's budgets include buying items like office supplies together in bulk and combining fleet maintenance (i.e., one garage for city and county vehicles instead of two).

In the long run, the Conference wants the state Legislature to look hard at a complete merger of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County, such as Louisville, Miami, Indianapolis and Nashville have done with their respective surrounding counties to cut costs.

What do you think of these ideas?

Point taken, Hiker. Philly also provided the model for the county sales tax and the poured drink tax.

"It would only make sense why have almost a hundred different government in the county. Total waste of money that could be pooled and go so much further."

Like Philadelphia? Have you seen the financial condition of a city that receives more money from the state, tourism income, and has higher local taxes.

There are actually 130 governments within Allegheny County.

Respectfully, Krakus

Wpahiker, You are right. The only thing you can do is either get enough people together to vote those idiots out, or get out yourself. Pittsburgh is going to kill itself on the backs of you poor tax payers. I read the news up there all the time and I think it's a shame what they are doing. I moved out because I couldn't take it any more. I hated watching the city I lived in going right down the crapper. I only wish that everyone had it in them to do the same. I moved a little more than 2 years ago and it's great. Sometimes the grass is greener on the other side of the fence.

The proposed merger may make the November ballot. This, despite the fact that no information has been disseminated to the general public, and no coverage has been given to the effect this will have on the other 100+ communities in the county.

But, don't think that this will matter, or that your vote will matter. Onorato and Ravenstahl both want this to occur, so it will - regardless of the will of the people.

Doubt that? Then remember the two stadiums, the new arena, and the PAT tunnel. All being built with public money, even with opposition from the public.

These people, especially Onorato, do not care about the desires of the public, only about their own political ends. Onotato has his eye on the Governor's chair, and sees the arena, casino, and merger as his stepping stone to that office.

Ravenstahl, should Onorato escape the county, sees himself as the natural replacement for Onorato as the head of the newly merged County of Pittsburgh (you didn't think it would still be called Allegheny County, did you?).

And what of the surrounding communities? They will be assimilated into the new organization. And, with all the fiscal managerial power thus far demonstrated by the city, will become the new ghetto's as their tax money is sucked into that black financial hole - Pittsburgh.

Voters, you've been warned, you vote doesn't matter, the merger will happen because the political livelihoods of those involved are at stake!

Quit reading -- go outside and do something!

If you were to actually read the comments you would see plainly that my labels refer to ideas and idealolgies. Not people as you claim. Even with the truth starring you in the face you claim denial.

I would have to say that your previous comments and postings on these boards are in total contradiction of your last statement on this board. You feel the need to label all who disagree with your opinion communists. That shows an obvious lack of credibility with regards to your comprehension of what true communism is.

I choose not to label anyone if at all possible because I believe in personal freedoms.

And yes communism does work in theory ONLY becuase of the natural human instinct of greed and domination. In true communism there are no leaders everyone is equal and works for the greater good.

Also I have a degree in political science and studied and learned of 17 different religons. And unlike your accusations I actually learned from my studies and readings. I didn't just read the material.

Tolerance is for the weak who want handouts for the rest of thier lives and don't want to work for freedom.

As for the T.V. talking heads as you ptu it; very few if any have ever spoken truthfully. I despise your T.V. talking heads because the statments I make sure do not come from them. If they had thier way not you or me would be able to express our opions on this blog.
