A bill to ban smoking in most workplaces and public spaces in Pennsylvania was signed by Gov. Ed Rendell and is in effect.

The ban has several exemptions, including some bars, private clubs and portions of casino floors.

Cigarette Smoking Dulls Taste Smoking May Affect the Shape of Taste Buds and Impair Sense of Taste, Study Says By Bill Hendrick WebMD Health News Reviewed by Louise Chang, MD

Aug. 21, 2009 -- Cigarette smoking not only causes cancer and cardiovascular disease, it also dulls taste, making food less palatable, a new study suggests.

Scientists in Greece enlisted 62 young men of the country?s military forces, about half of whom were smokers, to test for taste sensitivity and to measure the number and shape of taste buds. The average age of the men was 25.

The taste buds on smokers? tongues were found to be flatter than the buds on the tongues of the nonsmokers, the researchers say. There was no difference in the numbers of taste buds between the two groups.

?Statistically important differences between the taste thresholds of smokers and nonsmokers were detected,? Pavlidis Pavlos, leader of a team of researchers from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, says in a news release. However, a few of the smokers perceived taste similarly to nonsmokers, and researchers say more study is needed to explain why.

Smoking can affect the shape of taste buds and also affect vascularization, or the formation of blood vessels, he says.

?Nicotine may cause functional and morphological alterations? of taste buds "without severely affecting their number," Pavlos and colleagues write.

?Smoking is an important factor which can lead to decreased taste sensitivity,? the authors conclude.

This just means that I will spend a whole lot less time in bars and restaurants.

Once again...Why are you people so obsessed with what goes on in an establishment that you have no intention of patronizing whether there is smoking there or not?

Why the rant John? The law does not allow smoking in restaurants anymore.

What is all this discusion about smokers rights? THEY HAVE NO RIGHTS!!!!Why did they start this killing habit anyways? They did it to look cool when they were in school. To fit in with the in crowd, not thinking about the future consequenses. Why should i be exposed to their second hand smoke? They are right where they belong...outside,away from the restaurant where i want to have "smoke-free" air to enjoy while we eat. THEY HAVE NO RIGHTS..no one put a gun to their heads to start their disgusting habit and who do they think they are to push their deadly smoke on me. Most smokers only think of themselves anyway because they can't wait to light up after they eat even though others aren't finished. They wanted their addiction and i shouldn't have to be exposed to it. KEEP THEM AND THEIR DISGUSTING,CANCER CAUSING HABIT OUTSIDE,where i don't have to go home, burn my clothes and take a shower after having dinner with them

A school year has now passed at our state owned university system with no resolution of the challenge to the Chancellor's claim that their outdoor smoking ban is required by the Clean Indoor Air Act. How can university officials conclude that a law whose stated purpose is "PROHIBITING SMOKING IN ENCLOSED AND SUBSTANTIALLY ENCLOSED AREAS" translates into an outdoor smoking ban? Their twisted interpretation of the Clean Indoor Air Act comes as no surprise since factual distortions were frequently used to shape public opinion in support of a ban. It's a shame that the Pennsylvania state university system is willing to stoop to such a low level.
