An ice rink similar to the one at Rockefeller Center in New York City is set to open Dec. 18 in downtown Pittsburgh. What are your thoughts?

it will make an nice statement to the city i dont believe trying to say it will be like what New York has is correct because Pittsburgh should tout it as their own. But I say bravo can't wait to see it during the holiday season especially when PPG lights up their display .................what a sight that will be. My questions are what hours is this going to be open and will there be supervision? I also beleive with the parking nightmares in dowtown some consideration should be given when the people visit the rink. Like maybe buy this pass and this will include your parking.

A lot more than a pyramid statue at the point.

I have always been proud of the fact that I hail from the Pittsburgh area. This is just another feather in our hometown's cap. I think the City of Pittsburgh is absolutely beautiful.

I love the idea, but I don't know how much it'll be used. People just don't live downtown.

Great! Another place for bums to flock to! Public officals need to skate around town and pick up some of the trash that dominates the downtown landscape.

It's a fantastic idea. If we ever hope to develop into a truly cosmopolitan city, we need the sort of things that attract families and couples to the downtown at night. Promoting activities that by their nature are based on the consumption of alcohol (Market Square promotions) are ultimately self-defeating. All you end up with are more drunks downtown. Even if it isn't a significant financial success, it is a step in the right direction.

I think it's a great idea. I heard it will be bigger than the one in New York, and with the gorgeous glass of the PPG building as a backdrop, it should be prettier too. My one concern is that people will think we are copying New York's idea, but that is not really important. I'm sure NY is not the only city with a skating rink downtown, and ours should be unique enough that it will not seem like a cheap rip-off.

I think it's a good idea. I was in Pittsburgh last week and walked through PPG Plaza a few times, and that's all pretty much everyone else was doing too --- walking through it. There were few places to sit, and while there was decent pedestrian traffic, the Plaza seemed more like a convenience than a destination. The ice rink and fountains will change that. It would complement Market Square very well, and it would be a nice place to go Downtown. I liken it to this: By winter it could be much like Rockefeller Center, and by summer it could be much like Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta --- the best of both. I know how nice it looks seeing families and couples ice skate in front of Rockefeller Center around Christmastime, and I've seen how much fun the kids have running around in the fountains during the summer at Centennial Olympic Park. This will definitely be a treat for Pittsburgh.

Why not? It can't create anymore traffic problems than a sporting or concert event... It certainly will bring more shopping, dining and other forms of entertainment dollars to the downtown area...It's fun, decent enjoyment for the whole family to enjoy. Let's do it!

i think that this is a great idea!!! And i am sick and tired of people saying that "thats all we need, what we really need is good roads". When will you realise that it isnt going to happen so just enjoy what you can get. This is a great oppertunity for the city and the area as a whole. Everyone is always complaining of haveing nuthing to do, but even when the city presents you with something to do, you turn your noses up at it.
