John Challis, who spread a positive message in his final months with terminal cancer, died at home in his sleep on Aug. 19, 2008. He was 18.
Challis used sports as a way to reach out to others, and he even started the charitable Courage For Life Foundation in his final months.
You can leave your condolences and other thoughts about Challis on this message board.

Although I did not know your young man personally his message of faith and perserverance touched me deeply. What determination and positive spirit he showed the world. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers.

I am sad that John died. My friend of 20 years died from cancer I know what the loss feels like. But I am a parent who has not lost a child, and I cannot imagine the grief of his parents. I think that losing a child is the worst thing that can happen to a parent, and my prayers go out to them. Sincerely Joy Wintersgill

I have deeply saddened over the past week over the passing of such a beautiful young man. John's positive outlook and graciousness in his greatest time of need should never be forgotten. The world is a better place because of John and the way Mr. and Mrs. Challis taught him respect and desire to lead a full life regardless of the challenges he faced. Mr. and Mrs. Challis are truly wonderful people.God bless and rest in peace John.

John's story touched my heart, as I am sure that his story has touched all of our hearts. I cried when I heard of his passing. He is such an inspiration to us all. God Bless him and keep him. My heart goes out to his family.

My sincere and deepest sympathies to John's family and friends. Like many others, I never met John personally but we share a common bond as I too wore the red and white. I am proud to have John as my "brother" in the fraternity of Freedom athletes..may God's face shine upon you dear friend. Should God grant me entry into His Kingdom, I look forward to meeting you, my brother in Christ. Dave95

To The Challis Family,
How proud you must feel of having brought such a wonderful, intelligent, funny young man into this world. To know the gifts your son contributed during his eighteen years on this earth with such grace, dignity and style is beyond understanding...Pain and loss is felt by all in this life but few get to say " What I left here has made a difference to many..." The Lord will hold you in the palm of his hands and his love and peace will light your life always...
Blessings..

I got to meet John last year when he walked into the Dr's office that I work in. He was so sweet and always had a smile for us. When the Dr. told us how sick John was, I was so shocked. He didn't look or act sick, So I would have never known. John would schedule his appointments and would say that he might have to cancel do to the fact that his nurse was coming that day and he might not feel up to it, but I can't ever remember him missing any appointments in our office. When I saw John on the news and in the paper I told my son all about John and how special he was and how he didn't let him being sick stop him from doing anything. I only wish that my son would have got to meet him like I did. I didn't know him like alot of people but what I did get to know of him and having the pleasure of meeting him in my office I feel very blessed. I know this is a very hard time for his family and friends but they have been so so blessed for having him in their lives.I will always remember the sweet young man with that bigger than life smile for the rest of my live and I hope that my son grows up to be half the man John was.So ever time I think life is hard or I get news that my cancer is back I will be thinking of John and how he lived life.
