As a black Pittsburgher, I resent the presence of so-called "affirmative" action, which is simply a quoto system of rewarding lesser qualified candidates for political correct senseless reasons.
I educated myself, worked hard, and not surprisingly, have found my success. Affirmative Action is nothing more than institutionalized racism, which hurts the employer, the bypassed candidate, and the minority who is handed the job.
I also resent the term "african american". I am an American, proud of it, and I happen to be black. I never seem to hear caucation friends get upset at being called "white", rather than "european american", so let's forget what homeland we all came from, and all be Americans.
Affirmative Action is an unfair cruel scheme, and should be ended in all it's forms. It is doing race relations more harm than good, and damaging our economy.
Sincerely,

I cannot believe the posts I have been reading. First of all, Affirmative Action is fair, and it was made b/c there are still some schools and businesses out there who are unfortunately still "racist". If a "white" person and a "black" person who had the same qualifications and education applied for the same job, but the employer took one look at the "black" person and denied them, would that be fair? And I believe it's time that the African-Americans get their break. Whatever happened to the 40 acres and mule that was promised after slavery? Did we forget about that? Or does "White America" want to brush that(slavery) under the rug? And as far as agencies go, Urban League helps "white" people too. There are just as many agencies out there for "white" people as there are for "black". The reason why some don't know about them is because they don't ask. I guess too proud. So spare me. Did I mention I was of a minority too? The box I check is "Asian-Pacific Islander".

As a racial minority I think Affirmative Action and racial quotas are insulting, not a good thing. I resent the implication that I can't get something on my own merit. For those racial minorities out there that are feverishly fighting to keep or institute AA everywhere, why would you want the whole world always looking at you and thinking you are where you are because of handouts? EARN YOUR OWN WAY IN LIFE, QUIT EXPECTING HANDOUTS!

Justwonder; I was not responding to your comments specifically, only my thoughts on the article itself. I think that you have taken my views slightly personally, and when I say, "Come on people!" I am addressing not only the people in this forum, but also the general public. I, too, was denied financial aid because of my family's income. I don't have a problem, per se, with the actual institutions that focus on so-called minority balance. What I do have a problem with is the fact that white students do not qualify for these particular programs, while ANY student may qualify for the programs funded by the state and colleges themselves. It seems to me that this is slightly unfair.
Think about that.

If you CHOOSE to check "African-American," then you will get higher priority than those who check the "White" box.

Does anyone know the answer to this question:
If you are white, but your ancestors are from Africa (there have been white families in Africa for many generations), do you get to check the African-American box since you, unlike many black people, actually have ancestors from Africa?

justwonder35,
No application can force you to disclose your racial status. If you CHOOSE to check "African-American," then you will get higher priority than those who check the "White" box.
There are no boxes for "Scottish-American," "Irish-American," "European-American," etc. even if you or your parents actually came here from another country. If you're white, you're white, and you get moved to the bottom of the list until minority quotas are filled regardless of your real qualifications.
And you think minorities have a disadvantage?

AndySkibo,
I am proud that you donate funds to the school. What is your point? I was specifically speaking of the programs that she/he had mentioned about (the ones focused on minority organizations, NAACP, Urban League, etc).
Think about it..

Just wonder35-
At "Tech" the major portion of the student "scholarship" financial aid comes from the earnings of the endowment funds, alumni and community fund raising, and "targeted" corporate funds (including the National Merit Scholarship program).
Talking to one of the Tech admissions counsellors I was told that there is a very definite "tilt" in financial aid in favor of applicants from coal patch and steel valley high schools, rural high schools, and minority students.
I "tithe" about 0.5% of my gross income to Tech's financial aid programs, and my employer has a "match" so that is 1% of my income each and every year.
