Do you think police should have considered other means to stop Christopher Penley, the student who brought a gun to school on Friday, rather than using "deadly force?"

Why couldn't they use BB's? I remember as a kid when someone got shot by a BB gun that hurt like crazy. And the embarassment of having to go to the emergency room to pick the BB's out was enough. It would stop the person and give the Police time to apprehend them safely.

I bet all of the parents who are saying there were other means to stop this student would feel differently if he had not been stopped. If their child had been shot because the police hesitated they would sue the school, the police department, any one they could think of. There was no way to know the gun wasn't realy. The situation was handled in the best way possible.

Using other means to stop a armed Student depend entirely on the situation at had and the danger to the police and public. A student with a Gun is still a person with a gun an that situation must be handaled on a case by case basis. However safety comes first. A 10 year old with a gun will kill you just as dead as an 18 year old with a gun. I like this idea about only people being allowed to post that use their Name and their City. So people can't hide behind their user name. If you have the the nerve to say it or write it, have the courage to sign it. Ronald A. Young Hono'lu'lu Hawai'i.

This was about the worst kind of thing that might happen tp a child, but for all the Monday armchair quaterbacks let me tell you first hand what goes through your head when comeone pooints a gun at you. You really see your life passing and you can feel the wetness in your shoes. Police officers are trained to shoot to stop and not to wound. The blame has to be on the parents for this mistake and not the offricer who did his job. Where were the parents when the kid painted the tip of the bun black, does this show that he knew right well what he was doing. This will happen again and again as long as there are no metal detedtors at the schools. You get the same prison term if you hold up a bank with a fake of toy gun,so the system feels that it is the same when used it that way. What if the kid had a real gun and painted the tip orange to simulate a toy and the officer walked up and got shot and killed because he thought it was a fake,Have someone point a loaded gun at you and then say you weren't shaken in your boots.

learning disability or not, there is no excuse to point a gun, real or anything else for that matter, at someones head, face or other body part.

What's the deal with the phone records too?

I hope Nations Law firm does an investigation....it doesnt sound as if we have gotten the complete story here as far as being truthful.

it'll be interresting in the end, to hear what REALLY happened. Investigate....to me, I'd have hired an attorney AFTER my sons funeral. Not the day he was hurt.

It hardly matters whether or not the child had a learning disability - if someone points a deadly weapon they need to be stopped BEFORE they harm someone, not after. Their mental capacity isn't the issue, their ability to get off a round - is the issue. The other children and staff in the school were safe because they were protected by the SWAT team who performed their job admirably. The gunman had a 9mm - it looked like a 9mm and the gunman presented it as a real weapon when he was threatening the other children with it. The only one responsible for this gunman's death - is the gunman.

My heart goes out to all that was involded in Friday's shooting. Do I believe there were" other means ", I do.

It shouldn't matter if its a child or an adult. I believe there " OTHER MEANS".

My heart is with you, Tonya

With all due respect, We (family and friends) do not agree with the decission to gun down this young man. #1. The boy obviously had learning disability (15 years old in the 8th grade!). #2. The time frame in which this occurred was not enough time to negotiate with the young man in distress (why didn't a family member get to try and talk to him?). #3. The child did not fire one shot as far as I've heard. #4. It sounds like the "professionals" in charge of this horrific incident did not use enough common sense in this particular case. I could go on and on. I hope the family of this boy lets Nation Law persue a thorough legal investigation so this will not happen to any of our other children. A sad parent Frown

Mine and my family's sympathy and thoughts are with all who have lost, (mostly the victim's family) Sincerely, Carrie

The police say that they could not tell wheather it was a real gun or not so how can they say the gun was pointed at the office I have a five year old child and I do feel that some other type of force should have been taken ...... not to just shoot this kid in the head this has become much more than a problem for this kids family but this is something that office has to live with the rest of his life (did i make the right decision to shoot this kid in the head)

I Wish you the best

It is easy to say "if it were my child I would expect the SWAT officer to do the same" No,you would not! you would want the same as these parents would, and they wanted their child! So would any person with child. How do I know this, because I am a parent with a child that has died I know first hand what these parents are going through. Some are quick to have an opinion on what these parents should do for their son who is being kept alive so that his organs can be harvested...hello, the child is already dead! But the father remained at his son's side as the mother went to be with her other children, I suspect what we do not know is that they take turns. To leave the remaining children with a babysitter at a time like this would not be the proper thing to do , they just lost their brother and they do not understand all of this, they need some kind of assurance right now and a babysitter just wold not be the proper means to this end. We who were not there do not know what actually happened that day, we rely on the news to tell us the story, but I have also been in the news and I have learned just how they deliever it by leaving important fact out. They do not tell all and in the right context. As for the SWAT Officer he did not do the right thing he used unreasonable deadly force in this situation, the reason I beleive is that USA is too jumpy for recent situations and thinking is only going in one direction, if one is causing terror, kill them, even if it is a child. It is true, this was a very uncomfortable situation for the other children, but they were out of immediate danger at the time of the shooting, so this was no longer a threat. They should have negotiated........he was a child for heavens sake!
