The family of two girls killed in an Orlando crosswalk by a driver allegedly talking on a cell phone are circulating a petition to change the law in Florida. Should the law be changed to restrict cell phone use when driving? Share your thoughts.

Quite obviously as one travels the highways some 85%, or more, of the vehicles one pulls abreast of finds the operator of the other vehicle engaged in conversation with another. The adjoing problems are: 1. They are weaving back and fourth in both lanes 2. Going too slow and backing up traffic 3. Haven't realised that the traffic light turned green 20 seconds prior and are just sitting there 4. They are attempting to make a one handed jerky turn into yet another shopping center 5. They don't hear the emergency vehicle trying to get by and have them blocked I must have one of them new fangled phones that tells me who called when I don't pick up while I'm driving or in a restaurant so I can call them back when I am safely parked or at home or sitting on that park bench next to the inner costal. Oh, what am I thinking that would be courtious and golly gee why do that when I could run a red light and run some folks down, that would be more fun, whee ... Use the phone in the car in emergencies not for general chatter. Our roads are becoming more heavily traveled every day, we must be alert to the road ahead 100% of the time while driving, one distraction can bring catastrophic event, the choice is yours.

To the cop whining about drivers using cell phones:

When cops get off THEIR phones and stop using their laptop computers WHILE DRIVING, then maybe you can say something to the civilians about it. Oh, but wait, cops speed and run red lights, too. Oh and yes, they tailgate. Gee, I guess maybe they should start practicing what they preach.

Drivers should concentrate on driving. Outlaw cell phones while moving!

There should be no phones used while a vehicle is moving by the driver. As a police officer I have seen many accidents caused and near misses while using a phone. The arguement is that it is no worst than drinking or eating, but it has been proven by studies that is much more dangerous because oof its distraction. People argue that police and truckers use radios while driving, that is a necessary thing. There are probably 7 out of 10 people that can safely use the phone, but it is the other 3 that will cause all the problems. There is NO call that is that important that it can't wait until you pull over to the side of the road to answer or make the call. Didn't the young woman last year go through a red light and kill 2 children------enough said

cooper79 Where did I say that the laws are better or worse in NJ? I just stated the law. You should go to school and learn how to read, before you post.

Oh no, don't do that!!! Think about this, just say a women is being followed by a unknown stranger. Should she (A) stop using her cellphone to call for help while driving, or (B) wait until she arrives to her place of residence. Which one would you choose? I'ts bad enough our President looks and acts stupid don't join him. Lisa Bennett

goodole1--I didn't write the law, it states that if you are going to talk on your cell phone while driving a car you must use a hands free device. You can argue this all you want that is the law in NJ.

You missed the point Senator. You have to take you hands off the wheel to dial. So how does that make it hands free?
