ONLY RESPONSES THAT INCLUDE A FIRST NAME, LAST NAME AND CITY ARE ELIGIBLE TO BE USED IN WESH NEWSCHANNEL 2 NEWSCASTS.
Police say the woman who ran a red light, killing two young children, will probably not face criminal charges. In Florida, running a red light is not a crime -- it's only punishable by a traffic citation. What do you think should happen to the driver? Should she face a stiffer punishment? Or, since police say she didn't have criminal intent, is her punishment fair? Also, witnesses reported seeing the driver on her cell phone at the time of the accident. Is it time for the state to reexamine its cell phone laws?

Why did the automobile manufacturers put a brake pedal in each vehicle they designed? I think it was installed to use NOT to rest your foot on while driving down the highway. I have a serious problem with everyone else being blamed for a stupid mistake that a driver makes. The red lights were installed for a purpose which I believe was to allow drivers from side streets to enter the highway, not for a driver to run. If you are paying attention you will be able to stop. If you don't stop and this action results in a accident you cannot blame the other driver for your stupidity. Good grief "Charlie Brown" who is the idiot the law breaker or the other person that has done no wrong other than obeying the law?
Respectfully, Perry

Piper180 - How about hands free devices?
I mean by all means...if a professor in Massachussetts said that cell phone users and drunk drivers are in the same league, than I proclaim that it must be made law! (The sarcasm is being laid on pretty thick here). Come on... we all know that the only people in this world more whacky than professors from Massachussetts, are Senators from Massachussetts.
I agree with you for the most part. All I'm saying is don't back up your opinion with the fact that one professor in Massachussetts supports it.
While we're at it, why don't we outlaw message boards because they keep people from being productive at work. LOL!

I don't care what all you liberals and pro cell phones in cars say. The bottom line is the children would be alive if the woman was not talking on her phone. It has been proven by a professor in Massachesetts that talking on a cell while operating a motor vehicle is about the same as being under the infuence of alcohol. This woman deserves to be in prison.

She did not say she saw them in the intersection. SHE DID NOT SEE THEM. To this day she maintains that she does not know where they came from. And I would still like to know why the heck the mother didn't have a scratch on her. Maybe because she saw what was happening and decided to save herself?? She is at LEAST as responsible for what happened as Ms. Townsend! What kind of parent doesn't look before crossing? What kind of parent allows their FIVE YEAR OLD to cross a busy road without holding their hands and WITH NO SHOES! All of you people who are getting your information from the media don't have a clue. Of course they aren't going to tell the whole story, they are going to tell whatever it takes to get your ire up against this young woman. Did you know a woman hit a 9 year old girl and because her parents want it to be over it's pretty much OVER? The Velez family are doing anything and everything they can to keep this firmly in the spotlight. And all of you imbeciles who don't know ANYTHING other than what is written in the papers are helping to make that happen. Get a clue and become informed. This was an accident plain and simple! This young woman will live with this every day for the rest of her life. And I hope that should the Velez's have any more children that they watch over them a little better. This would NOT have happened if that woman had done her job. MS. Townsend is not without fault, but she is NOT a criminal. Period!

Unbelievable. We're ready to crucify this poor girl for what she did. Don't you think that she has been punished enough by having to live with the fact that she killed those 2 little girls? I would love to hear from the one person in this discussion who owns a cell phone and has NEVER used it while operating a vehicle...
However, why not take this passion that you have for cell phone drivers, and put it towards fixing this state's inept capability to protect children from CONVICTED sexual predators. Accidents happen on the road, but repeatedly letting these monsters out of jail and stating that they're "rehabilitated" is the real crime.

An accident is when something happens that could not be avoided while following good safety practices. (My opinion)
A deadly weapon is generally defined as a firearm or anything manifestly designed, made, or adapted for the purposes of inflicting death or serious physical injury. The term includes, but is not limited to, a pistol, rifle, or shotgun; or a switch-blade knife, gravity knife, stiletto, sword, or dagger. However it can also include any instrument, device, or thing capable of inflicting death. (a car???) So, my friends, ?accidents? caused by red light runners are no accidents but suggest carelessness or stupidity and as I mentioned before, lack of respect for traffic laws.
I say, stiffer penalties and if the cap fits, wear it. That also inicludes me, if I should be so stupid.
Sincerely EJP

Relax! I did say it was extreme!!! Seriously though, almost every day I see drivers running a red light. I've even heard radio disc jockeys saying that when they were in a hurry, they will run the lights. I pray that I don't cause an accident. If I did, it will not be from running a red light - I DO STOP on amber. We can't keep sending the message out to our children that it is OK to break the law. I for one am happy whenever I see the motorcycle cops with the radars.
Sincerely EJP

Evedrybody stop and look at the facts. There is an increase in the amount of people that feel their rights on the road are more important than the rights of those around them. They have the right to run that red light, they have the right to pass you on the median, they have the right to travel 80 mph through downtown on I-4, you get the picture. The only way to get them to stop is more police on the roads, more opportunities to use cameras, and HARSHER PENATIES. It may sound like "big brother", but it might just save your life.
