WISN "12 News On Assignment" is taking a look at violence in Milwaukee through the eyes of children and families. As city officials and community leaders struggle to fix the problems that have taken decades to develop, what do you think would be the key to stopping the violence? Share your constructive thoughts on how to keep children safe.

Sure, parents should take the lead; but what about UNFIT PARENTS? Those who don't know right from wrong themselves, or set bad examples for their kids? Pandora's Box WIDE OPEN! I'd like to see my police clear the skate-boarding kids from my streets, AND arrest their parents; these kids and parents know better, but think they're 'Something Special.' Though the kids are lawbreakers, if you hit one, YOU are at fault...!

swmom has had the most logical voice in this discussion so far. Schools cannot do it alone, police cannot do it alone, families cannot do it alone The phrase 'it takes a village' is overused but it really will take a city and then some. People have to turn off their tv's, stop caring so much about AM idol, best 'dance team,' whatever and pay attention to their own streets. Talk to neighbors and neighborhood kids, call the police when necessary. Stop voting to cut budgets for protection, education, health, and jobs, and then blaming. Kids need places to go, especially when parents are working a lot; parents need to BE parents, not adolescents, and show kids what it means to grow up. Make and enforce rules, read with them, see that kids study, show up for class, and behave while they're there. If all, even most, parents and others supported schools and the police in their best efforts, the change could be amazing! AND get the guns off the streets; they can turn a little beef into killing. This city is not finished YET.

I'm just wondering about what type of summer we're in for, since it seems like things get worse when the weather gets warmer

How about start looking at the way the public schools are run? When I walk through the North Side Middle schools I will tell you what I see. NO Administration controlling the halls. Who is in charge? Yes.. Kids. The halls are filled with kids with their pants hanging off their butts screaming at the top of their lungs to the guy down the hall DURING CLASS TIME!

Thank you for focusing on the challenges that we are being confronted right now in Milwaukee. I recently moved here from the East Coast, and overall, I have found a broken community that is in despair. I don?t understand all of the issues or why this community has so many challenges, but something needs to change soon. The Milwaukee Public Schools are a maze, jobs are scarce, and there are socio-economic and racial inequalities that negatively impact our community. I understood that there were millions of Federal funds that were awarded to Milwaukee for neighborhood revitalization projects, but these funds haven?t been utilized. Why not? Something needs to be done NOW, get involved in your children?s schools, write letters to your congressional leaders, and get active in your neighborhood associations. Until we take responsibility for our community?the violence will continue and more children will die. Milwaukee has so much to offer, let?s make it a better place for all!

I believe that this community needs to realize that we need to leave our "egos" and misconceptions at the door and extend our hands to help one another. We have many people throughout our community trying to make a difference, but it is high time that those of us who sit at home and watch the news and complain about our city, get up and get involved in some small way to help. Our children should be everyone's business and our school's can always use volunteers to help with reading skills. I know it's easy to sit back and point fingers, but the realization is that we have a major portion of our children suffering and they need good role models and should be shown that EVERYONE cares.
