What are your thoughts on the fatal police shooting of 19-year-old suspect Michael Newby? Some say it's just another case of police brutality, while others say the officer was justified. What do you think?

FIRST OF ALL DO NOT PUT YOURSELF IN THOSE SITUATIONS.DON'T ARGUE/FIGHT/RUN FROM THE POLICE.ALL OF THESE SITUATIONS COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED.BUT I DO NOT THINK THE OFFICER SHOULD HAVE SHOT HIM IN THE BACK.WE SHOULD WAIT TILL THE INVESTIGATION IS COMPLETED.

This shooting is the latest in a recent string of shootings by the Louisville Police Department. These shootings are not all in the same category, but the most recent is at best greusomely disturbing. Michael Newby was not just "another young black man," or another criminal on the streets. Michael Newby was not acting in a violent manner. As a matter of fact, Michael Newby was running away. According to reports on wlky.com, he was not running toward the police or coming toward the police in any manner. In my oppinion, Michael Newby was the victim. In my oppinion, the officer TOOK the life of this yhoung man away. By ignoring that wrong, we are taking even more away from Michael and his loved ones. We take their dignity. Instead, for once, lets give something back. Lets stand up and attempt to give justice to Michael. Officials such as Chief White and Mayor Abrahamson say to wait until all the facts are out. I have heard enough. The facts are clear. What more do they need to hear in order to stop the violence against young African American males that live in the ghettos of Louisville. It is so hard for anyone to make it out of the ghettos alive. Michael Newby was special. He could have made it, but that chance was permanantly taken away from him. The police should protect and serve, not disrespect and disservice the community. Instead of preserving order in our community, this officer added to the disruption. Sure, Michael was not abiding by the law when he sold drugs. However, last time I checked, dealing drugs was not penalized by the death penalty. THIS IS WRONG. People need to hear that. People need to realize that this is not some fly that can just be swatted away. This is a problem in this community. All of the citizens and the activists need to make it as loud and as clear as possible. WE WILL NOT STAND FOR THIS. WE WILL NOT ALLOW INNOCENT LIFE TO BE TAKEN FROM US.
Forget everybody elses oppinion, me

First and foremost, even if Mr. Newby was buying or selling drugs, fleeing the police is not a viable reason to shoot anyone. Even though this is the same reason for Desmond Rudolph's execution. But that's not the point, nor is the fact that a gun was found on him. If there is no gun shot residue on the front of Newby, this means he never got a shot off in any direction. And unless the police can verify Newby's prints, skin cells, or clothing fibers on/in other compotents of the gun (besides the obvious areas like the trigger) they can not with any certainity verify he brought the gun to the scene. A gun can easily be planted. And from eye witness accounts an ambulance did not show up until 15 to 20 mins. after the gun shots were heard. So this young man didn't have a chance to make it. So what is the reason for not rendering help for this man? Also the police officers who showed up later and handcuffed Newby did not know that he was shot, why? How do you shot in someone direction, see them go down and stay down, and not immediately call for an ambulance? What kind of person are you? That tells me you wanted him to die so he couldn't tell his side of the story. I'm a young woman who doesn't have a Law degree and I can see that this man is guilty and he made sure there was no way that Newby would ever be able to tell his side. It really sounds to me that this cop was buying drugs for his own personal use and Newby figured he was a cop or saw his gun and thought his life was in danger. And you know what, if that's what went down, then he was right.

Everyone needs to wait until all the facts of this case are in. Although the Police Officer in question has quite a bully reputation here in Bardstown it doesn't mean the shooting was not justified. I would like to know why the Police never shoot suspects in the leg, or lower body to stop them instead of killing them. It does not seem to fit the crime so to speak. Buying or selling drugs is not punishable by death in any state that we know of. Heartfelt prayers to the family of the victim, its always hard to deal with a death in the family much less under these circumstances. Kudos to the Chief of Police for getting all the details before judging anyone.....

Of course the fatal shooting of Michael Newby was justified. Anytime drug dealing, pistol-packing criminals are walking the streets they're a danger to the citizens and the police who are sworn to protect them.
The Reverends will protest, Newby's family and friends will shed tears and pretend they didn't know Newby was a drug dealer, but the fact remains he was selling drugs and packing a 45 caliber pistol, a pistol that fires a bigger projectile than the officers service weapon. All the Monday morning quarterbacks will be second-guessing the officer for shooting the criminal in the back: they have never been in that situation before. Bottom line, what was the officer supposed to do, wait until Newby found sufficent cover and let him empty his 8 shot 45 at the officer before the officer returned fire? I don't think so.
I have a few questions for the grieving family. How many of you lied to the police about Newby's where abouts when they came to your house to serve the outstanding bench warrant Newby had on him? How many of you talked to him about the implications of carrying a pistol and dealing drugs? Why was Newby armed? Remember, this wasn't the first time the police had a run in with an armed Newby.
Had Newby simply followed orders he would be alive and out on bond today. What's so hard to comprehend about "Halt; put your hands in the air?"
The officer will now spend the rest of his life fighting the nightmares, flashbacks and demons that will surely come to haunt him in his sleep. It the police err, the courts are the place to settle it.
Halt; put your hands in the air. It's not rocket science.
that's the way it is.

I must say that given the information this shooting was unjustified. Anytime someone is shot mulitiple times in the back, with no weapon in hand, leads me to believe that excessive force was used. I can only pray for the family of Michael Newby and that justice will be served.

I really want all of u to think. Why is the offficer takn the 5th?; why didnt he have his video on like he was suppose to? YES, IT IS RACISIM! IF IT HAD BEEN A BLACK cop WHO SHOOT A WHITE BOY N THE BACK(MAYBE YOUR SON OR RELATIVE) IT WOULD BE A DIFFERENT STORY. IT IS MORE KKK'S ON THAT POLICE FORCE THAN U ALL WANT TO ADMITT. YES KEEP COVERING UP BUT WHEN GOD(U SAY U DO KNOW HIM, RIGHT?) GETS THRU, IT WILL ALL BE ALRIGHT. I remember n the 60's when I was about 12 yrs old, they found white policeman n their cruiser, where some blacks got tired OF THE ABUSE BY THE OTHER RACE. PLEASE, PLEASE, DONT LET IT HAPPEN AGANIN.

My thoughts are with the family at this time,But I to have some questions like what was he doing with a gun and as reported a white substance on his person? You can not walk the streets with drugs(buying or selling)and a gun and think that your not going to get into trouble,I'm not saying he needed to be shot and killed but trouble was coming his way!!

If this officer gets away with shooting this young man in the back then there is something really wrong with our police force. No matter what the young man did he did not decieve to be shot in the back three times. No one should be shot in the back at all. The officer pleading the 5th should tell everyone that he must have something to hide or he would say what happened. He knows he done wrong. Plus, when your undercover and taping everything but it just so happen this one incident wasn't recorded. Something is really strange about this and i hope he doesn't get by with this.
thank you judy carey
