Is it a case of excessive force by police? Or did the teen accused of stealing a car and driving toward officers deserve to be shot? Is this a race issue? What are your thoughts?

I was raised in Western Ky, near O'boro, and spent almost 20 years in Lexington after spending 9 years in the US Navy. I have always felt like I was pretty liberal when it comes to crime and criminals..there are always two sides to every story, and I do suspect that innocent people of both races, but mostly black, have gotten the death penalty. But THIS case is a no-brainer!Maybe the cops could use rubber bullets or gas or something but if a cop says STOP, then YOU STOP! I don't know if these teens today think life is a video game or what, but it's pretty obvious this young man had no adult supervision growing up. If these kids want to be gangbangers, give em a weapon and uniform and send their butts to the Middle East. They probably wouldn't think it was so much fun, then..I don't think we should be in Iraq either, tho. violence just begets more violence, and theocracies and democracies don't mix !!!

KC Says: Yes racism is alive and well in the community, but you do not have any grounds to even menchion it in this case.

Who is YOU? If that was for me apparently you haven't read ALL of the postings! It's spelled mention not menchion.

No one that I have seen on this forum has made it a race issue so what's your point?

This case has a lot of different angles to explore, however these young men could have taken some body else's life while joy riding. I also think that parents should be held responsible for thier childrens actions. especially when thier children commit crimes when they suposed to be with them or in the bed. Yes racism is alive and well in the community, but you do not have any grounds to even menchion it in this case. wrong is just plain wrong. I do not think he should be treated like an adult by the court however he should recieve the maxium for a juvenile.

WHERE IS YOUR MOTHER. WE ALREADY KNOW WHERE YOUR FATHER IS. NOTHING A GOOD BUT WHOOPING CAN'T FIX. GOOD JOB TO THE POLICE, SOMEONE NEEDED TO DISCIPLINE HIM.

Regarding the Mark Johnson shooting by Jeffersonville Police officers, it is a constant reminder of what police officers must contend with in performance of their duty to protect the public. While I am sorry for the fact that Mark Jonson was shot and wounded, there are more questions than answers surrounding this case. From what I understand, Mark Johnson had a lengthy juvenile record for charged with numerous offenses. As for the 13 year old who was with him, I commend him for following the officers orders. Understandably Mark Johnson has some serious issues; however, I ponder where is parental authority. By right, both boys should have been home in bed at 12:15 am in the morning. Obviously, Mark Johnson has demonstrated by his actions that he is unwilling to be a law abiding citizen. His offenses are symbolic of the "revolving door justice". My question is: If the system is not helping Mark Johnson are they harming him by not institutionalizing him where he can get the help he desperately needs? Furthermore, if prosecutors decide to try Johnson as an adult, this should send a vehement message that children who commit adult acts will be treated as adults. Unfortunately, the shooting is a tragedy for all concerned- officers, suspect, family, and the community. Judy La Rone Perkins jlperk0115

I'm not going to sit here, and say NONE of these shooting aren't race related. Fact: Racism still exists. Fact: Not everyone is racist. When you do the CRIME then do the TIME! I don't care if it's 4 white girls, and 2 hispanic males. The kid stole the SUV,and he can't say I didn't know it was wrong. there's NO proof he's mentally challenged so using I didn't know is the last thing we want to hear as a reason. That kid knew it was wrong, and done it anyways. BAD! He knew he was straight busted, and there was no way out other than the door. He chose NOT to get out,and do his time. He chose to try to out run them, which could have been a case of "I thought he was gonna run me down" or "I got him,and I ain't letting him by!" Doesn't matter! The kid screwed up by taking the SUV,then screwed up by not giving up. I don't feel sorry for him.

This is a case of a criminal refusing to obey the law and getting shot in the process of committing a crime. Color has nothing to do with it. The criminal needs to accept his responsibility in this and so does his parents. He is a minor and that should make his parents responsible as well. Also, the news media needs to be more responsible in what and how things are reported. Report only facts and keep the "what if's "out of it. Even if this means your not the first to report the news. Give our new Mayor and Police Chief a chance; work with them, not against them!

I know this young boy personally and I just want to tell you all a little about him. He has been in trouble since he was 8 years old. He has 27 counts on his record that dates back to 1997, yes that means he was 10 years old when he got his first count. That equals out to 4 counts every year, once every 3 months for the past 6 years. His mother never really cared what he did, as long as he wasn't in her hair she could care less what he did! Now she wants to get on TV and act like she was mother of the year. You know now that I think about it I never once seen her shed one tear. She needs to be held somewhat accountable. Not once did she ever try to get help for him...see he is adopted and to her she was doing him a favor. I am not one who always blames the parents but sometimes a parent needs to held accountable. Just like the kid that was with him a 13 year old (who just turned 13 a month ago) . He is bad too. His mom does nothing to keep him under control. The courts had to order her to watch him get on the bus in the mornings (he gets bussed to a special school). What were these kids doing out that late on a school night anyway?

He is a bad seed!! I am glad that he is off the streets finally!

You know all these people want to talk bad about the police officers but look at it this way...If Mark wouldn't have been stupid enough to steal a car (mind you the police are known for hanging out at the White Castle right across the street from where the car was stolen)from the auction site then none of this would have happened. Everyone wants to put the blame on everyone but him. No one put a gun to his head and told him to steal that car, he did it on his own.

Yeah 9 shots seem like alot but he had a 3000 lbs weapon and was using it as one. If it was me I would have shot him too. Everyone says "why didn't they shot the tires out" come one now you can still ride on rims.

They were justified in there shooting. If he would have stopped when they pulled him over they police wouldn't have shot him. He took them on a 5-10 mile chase, the police didn't know if he had a weapon (which he did...the car) or not, I would have done the same thing.

It never ceases to amaze me why people who break laws, ignore police and try to harm others, eventually are referred to as victims. The only thing I can see that they are victims of is STUPIDITY! In my opinion, if a person (even a teen) steals, runs- at a high rate of speed, which puts a lot of people in harms way, chooses to not obey orders from officers, and then tries to run over them, that person is "open season" for the officers. Now us tax-payers will have to foot the bill for this type of sleeze. To bad it wasn't a DOA situation. Kudos for the officers.
