What are your thoughts on pit bulls? Should they be legal pets? Why? Why not?

Yea I believe pit bulls should be pets, they are very loveable dogs that must be kept social. I have a pit bull and it is one of the best dogs I have ever had. It is a shame the way the media exploits every pit bull attack across the country when you never hear about any other type of dog attack, especially when the majoroty of the attacks are not by full blooded pits.I do not approve of fighting them even though they were bred for that reason, but they should not be persacuted for it.Owners of these dogs should of these dogs should be educated on them though, they are full of energy, animal aggressive, and people friendly. They should not be turned into "GAURD DOGS" they are great pets and very intelligent.I also believe we need a PRO PIT BULL organization made up of RESPONSIBLE owners to help police the problem with the wrong people haveing thes dogs

This post is for the following people as well as anyone else that was MIS INFORMED, (duanea1969,ammitnme,Clarinda4,swilson208,Boxer Mom) I speak as a representative OF the family of the lil dog that got attacked, the dog was in its own yard as well as the 2 year old lil girl, The pits came ON the property of Mrs Mobley, and attacked the little terrier in its OWN FRONT YARD, i dunno where ya got your information, but where i come from i dont open my mouth unless i am 100% positive i know what i am talkin about, the owner of the pit bulls, would keep them caged often not feeding them for dayz at a time, THEN let them out to roam, thus causing several livestock as well as other animals in the area to be attacked, so all i have to say is find out your facts before posting and saying what you havent got a TRUE clue about. Thanks and god bless. Kat

Do your best let god do the rest, Kat

This woman should be arrested. You cannot shoot a dog unless that dog is causing or about to cause an immediate threat to human life and you certainly cannot shoot a dog on it's own property. This woman is an idiot and something has to be done. The man who assisted her and threatened the dog owner with a gun, he should be jailed on charges of terroristic threatening. Get real lady, you are not the law, if you don't like the law change it don't break it. I hope you are jailed. Thank you.

Sincerely, Duane

The owners of these dogs needs to be held totally responsible for any damages, or deaths occured by any dog. If the dog kills a person, the owner should be charged with manslaughter and serve time in prison or time served. If Louisville wants this problem to be solved, in time, the councel has to ban all vicious animals in the Metro. There can not be an exception in breeds, or here's and there's, it MUST be a total ban. If the owner will not submit to local authorities to surrender the animal, the owner should be jailed for non-compliance and the animal then be taken to be either adopted out or destroyed. It seems harsh, but it will give a clear message that we have had enough of the attacks.

So...the dog which was attacked was LOOSE? It went into a yard where the dogs were at? The mother TOOK her two yr. old with her to retrieve her dog as it was being attacked in the dogs OWN YARD. Then the mother who allowed her dog to run loose and create the incident took it upon herself to kill these dogs? What the hell kind of story is this? How disgusting. How irresponsible of her. This is a ridiculous story. Guns and threats, irresponsible dog owners, irresponsible parents....whine about a dog being killed by the same dogs in this story and yet cannot be responsible and a good enough owner to keep your other dog away from them? Good grief...talk about lack of accountability.

I just ran across the article of the woman that shot and killed her neighbor's pits. My opinion is that the woman should be brought up on charges. Her dog was off leash and in the neighbor's yard. She mentioned that her dog crossed the street. Her dog was not only off leash but also tresspassing. What would a person expect? Dogs will protect their home and family. That is all they were trying to do. There are no inheritently BAD pit bulls, their are bad owners that raise them to be bad. I am sorry if my opinion is not a favorite opinion, but being a dog owner and lover, it sickens me to see something like this happen.

Pitbulls are loving and protective animals. Pits are not vicious. They are made to be vicious by ignorant owners and poor breeding. Some are dog aggressive. If it were me, I would have never given my animals up to Miss Mobley simply because her animal came on to my property and was attacked! Most dogs are protective of their property and will defend it. My dogs (boxer and beagle/bassett mix)do not like other dogs in their territory. I feel sorry that her dog was injured but it isn't the pitbulls fault completely.....Miss Mobley has to take responsibilty for her part. Why should her dog be allowed to roam free without consequence?

I don't agree that pit bulls can be good pets - they can't. Each and every one has a genetic predisposition to attack without warning or provocation. It's a trait they were specifically bred to have and that trait has not been bred out of them. It's like having a loaded gun - your child may or may not pick it up and hurt himself or someone else, but the risk that he might is great enough that responsible people will lock that gun away. Same with pit bulls: the risk they will injure or kill a person or another pet is great enough that no responsible person would have one as a pet - much less in a home with kids. That said (and with more than ample, indisputable proof on record to back it up), the safety of every person's pet belongs to the pet owner - period. If a pet owner does his or her very best to protect their animal, keeps it confined to the propery, does not allow it to roam at-large, among other common sense measures, and the dog is injured anyway, that pet owner is not to blame. But, if a pet is allowed to roam unsupervised and that pet is injured or worse as a result, the pet owner is solely to blame. Animals like children are a sacred responsibility that no one should undertake who isn't prepared to make personal sacrifices in the best interest of thier pets and children.

This is ridiculous!

How can people think this is okay to do?

Those dogs were on their own property and her dog was off leash and on their property! Pit Bull or not, dogs that belong to the working group are bred to guard and protect their owners and their property.

The woman committed a crime as far as I am concerned, 1 her dog was OFF leash, 2 it was trespassing and 3 she murdered another person pets.

Did the dog know it was breaking the law by trespassing?

Probably not, but the pit bulls had no idea what they were doing was wrong either.

Dogs are born with instincts and no matter what kind of breed it is those instincts come into play more often then not.
