A proposed reality show called "Amish in the City" would put Amish teens in a house with non-Amish in a metropolitan area. Some think this show would exploit the Amish and their beliefs. What do you think? Would you watch it?

I am glad the show is not within the Amish community, rather outside it. But at the same time is tragic that some young minors, claiming to be Amish, will lend themselves for this kind of cheap show. If they want to know about the Amish there are excellent documentaries, some of the best research by scholars like Don Kraybill, and of course the doors of every Amish, beachey Amish, and Old Order mennonite churches are open to anyone who is searching. The proposed show would be exploitive as the sensitivities of the Amish would be dismissed for the sake of sensationalism driven ratings. The Amish are neither infallable, nor are they the "religious Neanderthals" as some delight in describing them. Having been raised in the culture, it's obvious that both sides tend toward over simplification.
One issue that's seldom addressed is the hate directed at Amish individuals by others, often complete strangers. While driving in a horse and buggy we've had objects such as bottles, and bricks thrown at us. More common were the angry and profane comments as cars passed us.
Unruly, obnoxious behavior is displayed by some of the Amish youths, and is inexcusable. As occurrs in many demographic groups, the decent majority end up bearing the backlash against those responsible.

Please do not give me that goes against their beliefs of their religion, my husband, my father, my father-in-law, my brother-in-law, friends, have all served their country, they are law abiding, god fearing indivuals. This country was founded on freedom but that freedom that EVERYONE OF US IN THIS COUNTRY enjoys came at a cost of lives. If that had not happened we would be living under some sort of domination to this day. I am writing this because I want people out there to wake up!, the Amish Culture, is not being exploited (enough), they are not any more hard working than the rest of us, they do not respect the environment anymore than the rest of us, their products are not made any better than ours,( the only good thing I can see about their products is that they are at least still made here in the USA). Where do you get these ridiculous notions? Books?, TV shows? the little sideshows? you see from your car window in Lancaster County? The reason I think a Reality TV show on the Amish Culture is a excellent idea is because it would show that they do hide behind their religion, they use it to hide behind to get away from a lot of laws in this country. The Amish Teen Reality show would be a joke, I agree, what is the point of it. The Amish would never condone a show on themselves, because of all the beliefs of their religion, how convenient! And I am sure there are some Amish out there that live the true way, but I have yet to see it, I live in PA, but in another area away from Lancaster,(though I lived in Lancaster Co. also) and I cannot find them. I could give you so many stories of having living with and around them, to counter any thing you could come up with. I know what I am talking about. I have lived with it daily for 14 yrs. Maybe 300 hundred years ago it was different. But then so were we.

This is to: Ok folks, now you are jabbing! My uncle is a multi millionare true blooded Amishman. He does not hide behind his religion! But I do agree, some do. He has allowed technology to help him get ahead in life. And who wouldn't? Anyone would if the had the "gelt" (money in Dutch) for it. Yes, there ways are weird, but you weren't brought up like that. I think the Amish culture has been exploited enough. Why do you think they're moving out off PA and heading to other states? For those of you that feel the Amish are stupid and ignorant, U* Y****! Your insulting me, my friends and my family members. Appearently you've never been exposed to the reality of being Amish.
No I have lived with it, for far too long, they are not (all) moving (nor being forced)out of the state of PA, but name me a state in this country that doesn't have a Amish community in it? (I would like to move there) What is the point of being Amish if they are now going "english". They do everything we do, except join the services and serve our country, for the right to remain FREE,something they are enjoying in this country. Why is it okay to go against or change their beliefs to keep up with the "times" but not allow them to serve the very country that has given them that freedom?

Snochick: If the Amish want to move out of state-let 'em. Why should we smooch woolen backside in effort to prevent it? Just think. If they go, the roads around here won't be gouged with buggy damage, nor decorated with buggy droppings.

I think if producers want to make a show revolving around the Amish, then let them (as long as the Amish consent). I think it would be a lousy show, but I'm willing to give the TV producers enough rope to hang themselves.
Putting Amish people in a true city environment may seem like a strong idea, but only if you share the opinion that Amish men and women are backwoods bumpkins that are ingorant of the 21st century and technology, which they are not. They are familiar with modern life and modern technologies but actively choose not to bring it into their homes. At the same time, they have a stronger work ethic than most people, working hard on the farms, wood shops, etc.
What makes them so fascinating is the unwillingness to let the modern world into their personal spheres.
Any TV show with that premise would have to create highly unusual circumstance to make the Amish look bad. They are equally capable as most people to handle living in an urban environment.

The Amish culture(cult)is a HUGE MYTH. The quaint image the tourism industry gives you is not right. Candle burning, horse and buggys, farmers and carpenters. They use noisy diesal engines, propane, gas trimmers, gas mowers, gas blowers, tow motors with rubber tires. They hire "english" drivers to travel long and short distances, and to plow their fields. The phones are near their homes. Their businesses are as modern as ours, answering machines, fax machines, computers, cell phones, electric, trucks with hired "english" drivers. They are not at all concerned with the ennvironment. The horrors I have witnessed with their animals is one you can never forget or forgive. They all have the same problems we have. The only thing I can see they have kept is the way they dress. The Amish Hide Behind Their Religon.

On The Real Amish World, one of the "English" house mates could contact the local ASPCA to make surprise visits to Amish farms and then....oh wait. They're Amish-this is Lancaster County. What was I thinking?
