Drunken driving charges were dropped against a York police detective because he is the lead investigator in one of the 1969 race riot murders. If he were convicted on the drunken driving charges, he would lose his police certification. Do you agree with the decision of the Potter County district attorney to drop the charges?

I keep reading comments about how he is a citzen like everyone else. I think everyone is forgetting just that, he is human like every one of us and makes the same mistakes we all do. I don't agree with the fact that charges should have been dropped (which they weren't)but I certainly don't agree with the fact that the media drag his name through mud. He has been put on the same program as anyone else with his DUI charges and record. We need to stop and remember all the good this detective has done over the years, which if any of you would bother to investigate is outstanding. There is most certainly other news out there that is more worthy then this to cover.

...and i am supposed to trust cops, seems like they only look out for each other. they say they are citizens like everyone else when they are off duty, guess this proves that untrue.

Its typical that charges were dropped, just like celebrities. They can get away with anything. A cop pulls you over for going 5 miles over the speed limit and flys past you in a 35 mile hour zone , at least 50 - 60 miles an hour just to get in front of you, and thats fair? I drive all day long and couldn't begin to count the times I've seen police officers do things that were illegal relating to traffic laws, but they wear the badge and we don't. Thats why they have the bad wrap they've got. Serve and protect, don't disobey the laws you enforce just because you feel you are beyond getting caught and /or paying for it. Although deep down, we know the justice system is about as worthless as the cup of coffee i drank this morning. Whats the world coming to? Police officers are just like you and I. If he was drinking and driving, he's guilty, plain and simple. Give him a taste of his own medicine. I've never been in trouble in my life, but guarenteed, if it was me, I'd be locked up right now. So no, its not right, AT ALLLLL.

absolutely not. Police are there to enforce the laws, and IMO should be held even more accountable if they break them. Regardless of what case they may be working on, they need to be subjected to the consequences of their actions, the same as anyone else would be. Get another officer to take over the case. No one should be above the law. Although, your social status and checking account balance certainly do play a big part in whether you are prosecuted for wrong doings or not. Really sad....

zmanjz,

I believe people are outraged about this situation because of the double standard. This detective, I assume, wouldn't mind placing someone in jail for the same offense. Then you have the District Attorney who misled the people when he said he didn't call and try to have the charges dropped. We need men and woman who are 100% honorable to guard our justice system, in my opinion.

we all see that our government officials and police officers think they above the law... BUT they are not. I would like to think not all of them at least . When is the right judge going to come along and slam it to 'em or is he in the ring of committing crimes and getting away with them as well. The judge obviously didn't have any care in the world for the people letting this OFFICER off with nothing to go do it again and possibly take that chance to kill himself or another . Its a total shame that the laws are not the same for all of us.

The charges should not have been dropped. If I had been the one charged, no one would have let me go free. I have seen police run red lights, stop signs, and ignore the driving laws that the citizens are expected to obey. I have seen policemen turn on sirens and lights just to get through a red light, and turn them off at the next intersection. The police have become "ticket writers", not law enforcers. How many people do you know who have had drunk driving charges dropped? We have now seen one.

I am furious that they we even consider dropping the charges, i once had a police officer tell me ignorance of the law is no excuse,he obviously knows the law. besides look at all the other circumstances, holding the trial up,how long could it take to find another detective, 30 years????????? It is a crime in itself how many politicans get away with the laws that they enforced, and voted on and the common joe gets double the fines, prison time etc. The politicans should get stiffer penalties for knowing better, shouldnt they be the ones setting an example for the citizens they are supposed to be serving,so much for serving and protecting.

I feel that the officer in question needs to not only lose his license like the rest of the good citizens of PA but also to lose his position on the York Police Force. It's time for people to take a stand. Next time he may actually luck out and kill someone....guess that will be okay for the GREAT CITY OF YORK too.

Do you seriously think this is the first time this individual broke the law driving under the influence? It is certainly not a petty crime. The punishment should be the same regardless of who you are or what circumstances surround your particular situation. It disturbs me that just because he is a lead investigator of a case he will be allowed to go out and do this again with no repurcussions.
