Two fishermen were caught trespassing on Three Mile Island. Other fishermen alerted security to the empty boat. Security doesn't patrol that part of the island. Do you think they should? Do you feel safe? Is there anything else they should be doing?

Open 07-24-2002, 3:39 PM I am not sure how some goofballs sitting on the ground with some machine guns are going to stop a 767 from hitting the plant, especially if just anyone can land a motorboat on the island.

The 'goofballs' as you call them might not stop the plane from hitting the plant, but the containment building would not be breached. There would be a lot of destruction and loss of life, but you would not have to be afraid of radiation.

There is an inner perimeter fence which was never breached. If you want to understand why there is no fence at the water's edge on the island, take a look at the recent destruction by the flood. A chain link fence in the way of the floodwaters is just a big net that gets jammed with debris and torn down by the force of the water.

shoemaker39 11-15-2002, 3:02 PM Not really. What is to stop the terrorists from taking down a plane into the reactors?

Lisa, let me reassure you and others about this concern. The concrete dome covering the reactor at a nuclear power plant is far more substantial than the World Trade Center or any of the many other buildings destroyed by Muslim radicals around the world. The containment building was designed to take a hit from an airliner. A general aviation aircraft could not penetrate that building. That is not an opinion; it has been thoroughly researched by the Atomic Energy Commission, the GAO, and the FAA.

The general aviation industry has recognized your concerns and has made a substantial effort to monitor the activities at smaller airports. If anyone would like to know more you can check out the website www.aopa.org and read about the Airport Watch program.

I hope this is informative for you,

I am certain that the security could be penetrated because we are dealing with terrorists who are not afraid of dying, and I also doubt that Harrisburg could be successfully evacuated. We've all seen the highways at rush hour. By the way...those who regard TMI as too remote to be a target.....remember that PA. is killing fish and poluting the Chesapeake Bay, so everything down stream would be affected by radioactive discharge.

What we see driving by doesn't look like much, but I'm sure there's more than meets the eye or at least I hope there is. I don't believe any facility is truly "safe" from attack. You can only do so much to protect any facility. Nothing will ever be totally safe.

9/11 changed America for ever, but few Americans have changed. We are just as vulnerable today as we were a year ago. Little has really changed when you look around.

Not really. What is to stop the terrorists from taking down a plane into the reactors? Our ground security can't stop that from happening. That's the only thing that concerns me. Otherwise I feel confident in the security that guards the TMI grounds.

God Bless You, Lisa Shoemaker

I think the governer has done a good job beefing up security at TMI. However, one must remember that regardless of precautions taken, there is always a risk.

For people who say the plant should be shut down, consider this. Just how much energy that we in the Susquehanna Valley uses comes from TMI and/or Peach Bottom? How much would it cost residents in $$ if we had a situation like California - not enough power? And most important of all - would the residents be willing to pay for it without whining?

My opinion is that people who lived around TMI prior to construction beginning there have a legitimate issue. Those who moved there afterwards should really bite their tongue! They had a choice of where to move, and no one forced them to live next to a nuclear power plant. They made that choice for themselves.

Bottom line, no one is ever going to be completely safe. The state government is doing what they can to protect us (with guards, KI pills, etc). Once again, if someone is unhappy with the situation, don't complain and moan, do something about it - like MOVE!

Hi, i now live in Kansas. My family lives right next to the island. As a child we would stop playing in the front yard so we could hear who they were call on the island intercom system. We were that close. I have NO FEAR for my families safety. We were there for the accident and ignored the panic attacks of the nation. Now we live in peace despite the terrorists and those who panic at the slightest chance of a terrorist attack. Where will you go to escape that fear? Where is safe from your fear? There are evils everywhere. Why CHOOSE to live in FEAR?
