The prospect of selling beer in grocery stores and convenience stores is the subject of a legislative hearing in Harrisburg today. We'd like to know what you think of this issue.

It will not change consumption. THose who want to drink will. Those who do not, will not. Why is the legislature wasting time with this? Don't we have much more important things to work on than this??

Ari, WELL SAID! The issue with Alchohol sales and Gambling are always the same, and just what you pointed out-PROTECT THE WEAK AT THE EXPENSE OF THE STRONG!
I drink often, I have a 1/4 barrel in my garage, I really think I am far more addicted to this damn forum than I am to Beer!
(Oh no, I hope Rendell doesn't try to Ban internet message boards!) LOL

let the beer flow like rivers, for we will flock like the salmon of copastrano! I believe Lloyd and harry first coined an idea similar to this! I love the religious elitists who claim god god god for everything! I am Catholic and we seem to forget they drank wine! Only WEAK people seem to be the focus, and those people get drunk at a bar and drive anyway!

Well the PA Supreme Court heard the case yesterday( I think they are still dealing with it,) but perhaps its time for Pensyltucky to get out of the dark ages and stop pandering to a handful of retailers with a good lobbying group.
All I know is that if Wal Mart can sell Generic Lipitor for $4, I'm pretty damn sure they can get the price down on a case of Lager! BOO-YA!

As someone who has lived all over the country, the prohibition of store sales is silly. According to the article, we are 4th in accidents WITH all the controls on sales. Could it be that limiting sales outlets causes individuals to purchase and consume more? First, the inconvenient hours of store operation and very limited choice of avialable brands cause me to do a good deal of my purchasing in Maryland. That is a loss of revenue to the state. (And no, I am not an addict, but I would like to be able to purchase Kirin beer from Japan and that aint happening in York county - I can easily purchase it in several locations in Baltimore.) Second, 18 year old "underage" youth sell beer all the time, even at Hershey Park. Hershey started selling beer at the Park in 1977 when I was in college. What is going on here are two very powerful lobbing groups, the Distributors ($$$) and the prohibition folks, whipsawing the legislature. The poll on this website indicatges 84% in favor of sales. The increase in revenue would be good for the state and help control rising taxes.
Pennsylvania needs to take a leap into the present

Relying on the addictions of others to bring revenue into the state...?
What do you think has been happening for years in the State run liquor stores? This idea that if beer and wine can be sold elsewhere is going to cause some huge rise in consumption is ridiculous. Wake up people!! Those who want to drink will. It matters not where they get their product. They'll still get what they want. If we don't want to prey on others addictions then I guess it's right back to making alcohol sales illegal. Have we learned nothing from history?

I hope the lawmakers don't let the paranoia of a loud small group of people make policy for the quiet majority. Anyone who is afraid of beer and wine sales in grocery stores needs to check out the statistics for alachol related everything, compared to Pa, before they start saying Pa is going to hell.

What is PA coming to?? Relying on the addictions of others to bring in more revenue to the state. "HOGWASH! Lawmakers will have to change other laws to sell Beer/wine in stores. Don't forget alot of school age students work in supermarket checkouts/convenience stores. If I'm right the current laws restrict minors from selling alchohol. Then what you'll see next is a 16 year old serving an ale at the local bar & grill.

It would be convenient to purchace beer and wine in the grocery store like they do in many states. In Pa they have to build half a strip mall on a busy road to offer the same service.

This should be allowed. Go outside Pa. And its there. Pa needs to get off the high horse and go with the flow. Wont be a increase in drinking and driving. As for people who drink and drive. If we buy from a beer dist. or even sheetz. Still will be the same. Cops will still have their work.
