Gun-control advocates lobbied lawmakers during a "committee of the whole" meeting in September, 2006. They want legislators to consider measures that will strengthen the state's gun laws. Philadelphia Mayor John Street led a coalition of mayors from other Pa. cities, and the delegation also includes New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Street said the mayors support proposals such as restricting handgun purchases to one per month and mandatory reporting requirements for lost or stolen guns. Also, a new bill that was introduced in the Pennsylvania state legislature that would have affected all gun owners has been modified after protests by gun-rights advocates. House Bill 760 initially proposed requiring all Pa. gun owners to register their guns early, like car owners register their cars. Under the bill, gun owners would have to pay $10 for each gun they own unless it is an antique. Owners would have to pay the fee each year. Now it appears, that proposal would only affect gun owners in Philadelphia. We'd like to know what you think about all of this. Share your thoughts and feelings in this WGAL.com discussion.

There's no way in hell I'm going to register my handgun each year. It's just another stupid reason for the state to make money. Let's cut out some fat in the capitol building in Harrisburg, starting with Spendell. I just wonder how many handguns he has in his closet. Most likely they're not registered either.

Adios, Michelle

Having to pay a fee to register my guns each year is rediculous. Doing so will do nothing to lower the crime rate. After the 1997 shooting of 16 children in Dunblane, England, the United Kingdom passed one of the strictest gun-control laws in the world, banning the ownership of most guns - including all handguns - by private citizens. Even the UK's Olympic pistol team must now practice outside the country because of this ban. Now for the $64,000 question; did this almost total firearm ban decrease the amount of gun-related crime in Great Britain? The answer is that after 10 years of nearly complete gun control in the UK, gun-related crime has nearly doubled in Britain. While law-abiding British citizens handed over 162,000 newly-illegal firearms to their government, British officials estimate at least 250,000 illegal weapons are still in circulation in their country. Without the fear of retaliation from their victims, criminals in possession of weapons now have a much easier job and along with robbery, assault and burglary in general, the incidence of gun-related crime in Great Britain has risen dramatically. The sad thing here is that the people who are scared of anyone carrying a gun legally walks among the very same people they are scared about each and every day without knowing it. Only a few family members know I carry. I am not a criminal; I don't hurt or threaten anyone. You can't pick me out of a crowd. One thing is for sure, I am carrying my firearm loaded and concealed each and every day no matter where I go. Your life, not just mine, may depend on it some day. I have been the victim of two attempted robberies and I never fired a shot. God knows what would have happened if I did not have my firearm. Maybe you antigun people should actually read the news about criminals with guns and the crimes they do each and every day. Are you going to put your life in a criminal?s hand and hope he doesn't kill or rape you and your family? When seconds count, the cops are only minutes away. I prefer to have a gun in my hand to defend myself than have a cop on the phone. The court system has ruled time and time again that the cops do not have a responsibility to defend or save you. If you sue them for not getting there on time to save you or for not showing up at all to save you, the case will be dismissed as it has been in the past. Wake up and get real, stop being so stupid.

guns aren't the problem, they don't kill, it is the idiot behind the gun! Instead of wasting my tax dollars on scum bags in jail for murder, attempted murder etc, go back to the day of hangings, losing a limb for stealing. I guarantee the crime rate would stop if they knew they wouldn't be going to the " Holiday Inn " for 20 years and getting 3 meals a day, not paying taxes, getting a high school diploma, college degree. Better yet, bread, beans, water, bolonga sandwiches, canned soup is better.

Yeah, I can't wait for the day when we are all walking ATM's for the dirtbags that still can carry guns.

Please Mr. Governor, take away my guns, while you are at it, pardon every criminal in the State Penns too.

Whose side are you on Ed?

HMMMMMM crime rate has fallen without Philavania and Rendell's gun laws going through!!! Kind of makes you wonder???

Rendell and other leaders touted a poll at the rally, which they said shows the majority of Pennsylvanians, 65 percent, favor several gun proposals. POLL? THERE WAS NO POLL, THIS IS A LIE LIKE EVREYTHING THING ELSE THEY SAY.

I wish Rendell would fix the property tax mess and stop trying to make new stupid laws! Peoples homes are being taken because they can't pay the taxes and now he should just say it and say he wants to take our guns to! All politicians are worthless!

"WHO SOLD THIS GUN THAT KILLED MY SON?"

did you see that banner on WGAL's slideshow of the gun control rally? the parent that made this banner has endured a tragedy that no parent should have to go through. but you have to ask yourself why the sign doesn't say, "who killed my son?" or "who let my son's killer out of jail early on a previous offense?" or, "who gave my son's killer a reduced jail sentence for previous offenses?"

furthermore, the gun in the picture is clearly some type of machine pistol (search "machine pistol" on google/images for similar images). for those that don't know (and that's most non-gun owners), fully automatic 'machine guns' or 'machine pistols' have been HIGHLY regulated since 1968, much more strictly than even semi-automatic rifles, so-called 'assault weapons'. they are nearly impossible for law-abiding citizens to purchase, license or own. therefore, they are COMPLETELY OUTSIDE THE SCOPE of this debate! but they look scary, and since almost all non-gun owners don't know the difference between fully auto and semi-auto, machine guns are great for advancing the anti-gun agenda, a cause whose supporters have never shied away from using lies and half-truths to further because the truth simply cannot support it.

i don't blame the misinformed parent for this inadvertant misrepresentation, but i do blame Rendell and every lawmaker and police officer present at this rally for not stepping forward and pointing out this glaring error because they should have recognized it.

of course, none of this will ever stop criminals from buying ANY type of gun on the black market, where there NO regulations whatsoever.

so to answer this poor parent's question: a criminal sold this gun to another criminal, who, tragically, used it to kill your son. in all likelihood, one or both of these criminals have long records and have been released early from one or more jail sentences, and/or they were given drastically reduced sentences through plea bargaining. if 'the system' had kept either of these criminals locked up, your son would probably be alive today. what a shame. you have my condolences.

Today's WGAL website article titled "Governor, Pa. Mayors, Police Rally For Gun Laws" says, "Rendell and other leaders touted a poll at the rally, which they said shows the majority of Pennsylvanians, 65 percent, favor several gun proposals that are stalled in the Legislature."

Which polls is this? By whom was it conducted, and more importantly (to avoid the possibility of bias), by whom was it financed? Have this poll's data gathering and statistical analysis methods been validated by independent researchers according to standard scientific practice, or have "Rendell and other leaders" blindly accepted the poll's claims because these claims APPEAR to legitimize the Governor's anti-gun agenda?

More importantly, are there any polls that show exactly the opposite: that a majority of Pennsylvanians are OPPOSED to one-gun-a-month gun control schemes? Did "Rendell and other leaders" even bother to look for any such polls? Or did they simply fabricate the claims of this mysterious, yet-to-be-validated poll to give credence to their failing anti-gun agenda? After all, the PA House Judiciary Committee voted down a one-gun-a-month bill just last month. Isn?t that the way our legislature is supposed to function?

I?ll tell you what IS true: a vast majority of Pennsylvanians are sick and tired of being blamed for Philadelphia?s problems. We?re even more tired of having to sacrifice our hard-earned tax dollars and constitutional rights in attempts to solve these problems. We're also sick and tired of liberal Philadelphia lawmakers trying to deny MILLIONS of law-abiding Pennsylvania citizens their constitutional rights just because these inept lawmakers and even more inept city leaders can't or won't control their own urban crime problem.

Reality has shown gun control to be both unnecessary and ineffective at reducing crime?anywhere and anytime it?s been implemented. What Philadelphia really needs is CRIMINAL CONTROL: get the degenerates off the street and your crime problem will disappear without ever having to lay a finger on the wallets or rights of law-abiding citizens.

The judicial needs to get tough with gun criminals. Slapping them on the wrist doesn't help. Put them away for an extended period. I don't think 25 years is too long!
