The city of Harrisburg is facing a major budget crisis. Officials have taken many steps to offset a multi-milion dollar deficit, but significant problems remain. We'd like to know how you feel about this. Sound off in this WGAL.com forum.

Maybe Harrisburg needs a new mayor and council. This budget mess has been going on for years and the same incomatendt people are running things. In the privite sector these idiots would be out years ago.

Well, shoot. I hadn't heard about this western museum before, but I definately would have gone had it been built! Oh well, I guess the bedget deficit is more important.

Ok, so what exactly are "non-tax" city dollars, anyway?

The Harrisburg Authority, like any other Authority is just an authoritarian regime that uses public funds with no oversight. In this case, using usage fees and other money that should have been used for the city to offset tax dollars to buy a pile of CRAP for a museum that was ill conceived to begin with. I mean really, what part of a Wild West museum in PA makes any sense. If you are any further East, your feet get wet and salty!

I will admit that I do not live in Harrisburg(nor would I choose to,) and maybe that means I shouldn't talk about Harrisburg business, but as that city goes, so goes the region, so I think it is my business. Maybe its time for a change in leadership before the ship sinks and takes the west shore with it!

A cowboy museum was so culturally relevant. How 'bout a nice aquarium or convention center?

I think that they have a lot of problems and they should think really think about where and who should pay the money it says in the article that the police chief thinks his department is next we dont want that to happen becouse if we have the police department cut then they will thave to hire more workers and the city will soon be faced with this decision again.

As I see it there are some very rea problems with the way in which the city is being managed. We want people and businesses to move into the city but with the graduated tax that new homeowners are being gifted with - leaves an increased burden on the existing property owners in Harrisburg. Property owners have already seen a 36% increase in property tax in the last three to four years. Water and sewage rates continue to climb, but what surrounding areas are being supplied with these services at a much lower-rate than city residence. Reportly there has been increased crime in the downtown area but reporting in the news has been limited or non-existing (at who's direction). Floating tax's bonds for the school district controlled by the Mayor and his Board of Control should create an additional "bell ringing." If my information is correct the School Board (now a mostly appointed board since four elected members of the board were removed by a Commonwealth Judge for dereliction of duty. It would seem that the Board of Controll can demand a time for the Elected School Board to meet) voted to float a substancial bond in the millions for the school district and this is on top of the funds okayed by city counsel to cover the deficit. There is also the incinator problem, the senator problem, and the issue of the artifacts, Harrisburg University and continuing work on existing school facilities in Harrisburrg. One question no one has ever answered for me what moneys if any is generated from re-cycling or how money is generated from the surrounding areas for services supplied to them?

Hope some of these comments provide food for thought Fadona

With the greatest concern Fadora

Borrowing money to payoff a loan is not getting us out of debt. The mayor wants to borrow $10.5 to keep the debt collector off his back. But he wants to borrow $9 Million to fix the incinerator, $17.5 Million to help the Harrisburg University, and $25 Million to build a new hotel. So I don't see were borrowing $62 without getting any extra income is helping the people living in Harrisburg. They can't pay the taxes that they have now.
