Blue Springs woman Melodie Chrisman was in Oprah's audience recently when the talk show host gave audience members $1,000 each to help someone who is deserving. Melodie is looking for ideas on how best to use the money to serve the community. If you have a suggestion, please share your reasons why this person or cause is worthy.

Not just Oprah but everyone should pay it forward to ALL veterans. Healthcare for etc, that used to be the norm, not the esception. I will in my lifetime establish an ongoing fund to grow to the size capable of caring for all Veterans, war or no war, service is service. You can not prevent wars without a standing military in place, it is just the right thing to do. One last thing, the highest percentage of homeless are veterans, you know the ones who made it possible for you to attend school(s) so you could get the job you have now. Thank-you, WolfSol

Speak with a Veteran and find out how they served your Family!

My idea is to take this $1000 and turn it into an ongoing stream of income for two worthy non-profit organizations (npo) in the K.C. area. These selection of the npo's would be the choice of the donar. This money would be enough to estblish two npo's with their own online travel website. This website would allow the supporters of the npo to book their online travel with the npo's site instead of Expedia, Cheap Tickets, etc.(this npo website is a private-label of Travelosity) This affinity fundraiser would allow the npo to continue to reap benefits over and over again from the same initial donation. The most dramatic and heartbreaking problem in KC is the homeless. 85% are persons released from institutions who are nolonger able to pay for their keep. They are unable to work and most have severe mental/medical and handicapped problems. One way to help them immediately is a "Street Attack", a one-on-one confrontation offering coats and blankets purchased cheaply at thrift stores. Most homeless will not(!) go to the shelters for help except for a meal, some can barely walk more than a few hundred yards from their self made "homes" in gutters or under bridges. Instead of offering coats to be picked up at sites, delivery to them personnally will ensure those that NEED them will get them, not the 15% that take them and trade them for alcohol or drugs. They will die without a source of warmth. To donate money to charities is fine, they have tax shelters and only about 10-5% of $ is actually used for charity, the rest is used for corporate organization. Make a stand, and a statement! Meet these people personally and give them a little love, let them know YOU care. It means more than coming from an organization. If you need help distributing, contact me at my web site, dfmc4240@yahoo.com.au. I just bet we can get some stores to donate blankets as well as socks, hats, mittens & coats if we need too!

HELLO EVERYONE!!!!!!!!! This is Melodie. I cannot express our overwhelming appreciation for all the submissions and the time that you have taken to think of someone else. We have chosen an incredible organization called I Can in Independence and they rehabilitate handicapped individuals and they go out and pay it forward everyday. They deliver, food, meals, cards etc. to shut-ins, they help with the historical sites, they grow their own gardens and sell their own produce but most of all they have been given dignity to go and help someone else and make a difference in someone's life. We were so humbled by what they do and on how little they do it on. What I say to each of you is now try and take the time to pay it forward and maybe pick one of these submissions and try and do what you can to make a difference. Cammie and I will never forget the gift we were given, which was not necessarily the money, but the opportunity to open our minds and our hearts and see each person we pass as someone to cherish. We will walk through life with a very different perspective for others. Again we thank you so very much for taking this journey with us and encourage us all to pay it forward each day. On a side note, the Oprah show did invite us back and we are taping on the 21st of Nov. and I am sure the show will air soon after that. Thanks again.

Melodie, You have recieved many wonderful ideas, let me share another with you. I live in Lee's Summit and volunteer for a charitable organization called "One Good Meal". OGM serves approx. 108-115 elderly and homebound citizens on a daily basis regardless of the recepients ability to pay. Each month this wonderful organization which is non-profit and ran strictly with donations, falls short of funds. By the Grace of God, they have managed to survive for nearly 11 years and the clients continue to increase. Your $1000 could be a great help to Betty McNaught and Roberta McArthur (the mother/daughter team that runs the show). If you find this cause worthy you may contact the LS chamber of commerce for contact information. Thank you for your time. Angie

Greetings Melodie, You have a tough job ahead of you. I agree with Jessica Powell. There are over 20,000 American Indians in the KCMO area due to few jobs, hoping to fare better here. With many having not completed HS themselves, their choices aren't great. The dropout rate is high, school curriculums don't support the culture, & the problem is perpetuated. Jessica is trying to provide books about our culture to the children to promote literacy and break the chain, encourageing the children to stay in school & hopefully beyond the HS level. American Indians are the most economically depressed of all peoples. If you can, please help. Thank you. Pam Riley

Blessings on All,

As I sat here and read all these stories, ideas, suggestions, my favorite really does say what "Pay It Forward" is all about. I agree with Kritter11. Take the $1,000 and purchase gift cards...any increments, whatever moves you. Then throughout the holiday season as you are out and about, when you see someone or something that tugs at your heart and you know that just a little something would brighten a day, you can "Pay It Forward" then. This way nothing is planned out or thought about for days, it is just spontaneous and happens when you least expect. I think this is what "Pay It Forward" is all about.

Hello, good day, good hope & good luck. If I were to be the chosen one I hope to show you how together we can make a meaningful and impactful difference to our communities as a whole, specifically eastern Jackson County Missouri. The pay it forward idea would be paid forward a thousand fold. This is about the future of our city. Allow me to introduce you to K.C. destiny. My name is Chandler Dean Davis Sr. I am a small business owner, and an aspiring inventor and visionary with a hope for the future. This project does not just effect one area or one person. I have dedicated my 21 year carrer to improving our cities. Let there be no doubt this is the ultimate improvement. I have spent 7 years designing this concept. However when your so poor you can't pay attention no one will give you the time of day. This is a people participation project, its also the most patriotic and politically correct concept every presented for consideration. This will bring a whole new meaning and understanding to the city. I have designed it to bring economic growth and international fame. It will personify any and everything synomous with K.C. and America. This will bring numerous communities together to ficilate and participate in creating this theme. I am seeking a group of people to help organize and present on a contingency basis. There are many focal points and I invite and implore you to come join the revolution. It is of epic proportion KC "keeping u centered" in the extreme center. We are the midwests finest and funest all year round playground. Its for tots of all ages and abilities, come and be a member of entertainment I-70. This is the land of the idioms and mock off concepts. Let your fingers do the walking call me, at 816-861-1257 or my cell at 816-878-3885 Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely yours

The concept guy.

23 pages worth of ideas! That's a lot and with so many serious situations, the job looks insurmountable doesn't it? On our way to the grocery, my honey and I got into a discussion about pumpkins...tis the season, you know and we laughed and joked about all the pumpkins and how all over the country they're paraded, pied and catapulted. Then I asked him, is there a Pumpkin Bowl for football? Kansas City has the facilities to sponsor a college Pumpkin Bowl! On a Chief's away day, Arrowhead Stadium could be roaring with Pumpkin fans. Pumpkin tarts and cider could be sold, along with those great brauts and beer. The grower of the biggest pumpkin and family could be honored guests and some of the profits could be used to help some of the needs illustrated on this page. Up with orange, red, bronze, magenta, yellow, green and white PUMPKINS, KC and the entire metro area can benefit.

the best always for the kc heart of america

A close friend Erin Caselmen has had a traumatic year with her father suffering a horrible accident resulting in his becoming a quadraplegic. Her family is struggling to make ends meet, pay for medication & therapy. Erin not only teaches school & coaches, but she spends many evenings helping with her dad. Through all this Erin is trying to put together her wedding, wanting to make sure her father can be there to give her away. She is a wonderful young lady doing all she can to help her family. I feel Erin is deserving of any help you can give for her wedding. Thank you for considering her. TAK52
