Indiana's latest standard license plates debuted in January 2003. Their design was selected (from five choices) by the public in 2001 through a vote run by the state. About 158,000 ballots were cast via the Internet and at BMV branches.
The finished product isn't exactly the same as the version that was shown to Hoosiers two years ago. Instead of the phrase "Back Home Again," which was on the design selected by residents, the new plates feature the address for the state government's Web site.
The appearance of the new plates' numbers and letters are different than their predecessors. The old numbers were raised, but the new ones are not.
Now that you've seen the final product on Indiana's vehicles, what do you think? Do you like the look?

how does Indiana consistantly pick the worst plate in the nation.... the new one looks like a worthless paper plate!!! second to only (Wander Indiana)... which was voted 49th out of 50 states.... we had only one decent plate in the last 20 years... amber waves of grain... the logo was lame... but it was really nice to look at... beyond that... we really stink at this license plate thing I vote for the truck plate just who votes for these... blind people!!! or just people over 80???

Moved here from Virginia. Big difference in plates. Here you have one choice of plates unless you choose a vanity plate, etc. They have all the plates from previous years to choose from. Its nice because if you don't like the current year you can pick something out from the previous years.... I wonder why Indiana don't give more options?
Just my thoughts...Jnx

Ok, lets weigh everything out. I'm 19 years old, I make something like $8,000 a year, and I own a 1989 Lincoln Towncar with almost 200,000 miles on it, a new engine, and a recently redone front end and power steering system. I pay the state something like $40 at tax time just to say I own the thing, then I go to the licence branch to pay $65 for the plate fee. Thats the second most expensive plate fee at my house which is for the oldest car that is worth the least ammount of money (its the oldest by 2 years to a 3/4 ton chevy and a 96 Mercury Sable. And what do I get for my expence?...... A plastic license plate with no raised letters and www.in.gov on the bottom of it. Did i mention its plastic!? The only thing on my entire car that is plastic is the dashboard!!!!!! No sir, I will not pay that much for a 1/16 inch thick piece of junk. I'll take my extra change and go for a vanity plate. Maybe it will actually be steel!
Hang loose and tell the state how you feel.

I moved to Indiana from North Carolina. The only time you get a new plate, is when the old plate is rusted, or stolen.
Why does Indiana waste money replacing perfectly good plates? I didn't change my vehicle.....but I was given a new plate. The other one is in perfect condition because my car is parked in a garage.
I think they should stop wasting our money. OH, and the money you spend on a vanity plate goes to the Republican and Democratic Party as a donation!!!
Save your money.

I just received my new plates in the mail and personally I think they are terrific. $176 is a small price to pay for the joy of having these attached to my vehicle. When I get home from work, I take a lawn chair out to the driveway where I just sit and stare at those plates until dark.
Thank you BMV for the SAVINGS!!!!!! Hoosier Pride !!!!

Well here goes the state just found another way to bleed the people. They can charge $9 to trade in you not wanted ugly plates or you pay $30 more to pull them off the shelf. I think they are still ugly { the old plates} but I am not going to pay $9 to get a better looking plate, I didnt want these plates , I didnt vote for these plates and since the state wanted them and they flopped they should pay to make it right, even the police didnt like them but we as the people pay for the Goverments mistakes, I feel if they paid for their own mishaps once in awhile then stupid stuff would slow way down but as it is they make a mistake, the easy way out is gouge the public, they do it with spending all the time then when they run low on money they raise taxes, if we make a mistake on spending we have to tighten our belts until we get over it but not the state, just raise more taxes. Nuff said.

Indiana's new standard license plates demonstrate both an overwhelming LACK of creativity and an apparent disinterest in promoting our state. Our plates will again for many years be drab, uninteresting and just plain PLAIN! Some eye-catching designs and colors abound on the plates from many other states. It is hard to believe this is an Indiana penny-pinching effort -- the extra cost for some design and color already has been balanced by what must be a big savings from making the plates flat and otherwise featureless.

Well, again the BMV has an opportunity to be a real agency that serves Indiana residents, yet it has failed miserably. The new plate are impossible to read. The single letter in the license plate number is now the same size of the numbers and now it doesn't stand out at all. Poor job BMV. Their was nothing wrong with the number/letter sceme before, why change it? If any change was needed, make it more reflective so it is easier to see at night. Oh, but that would have been a logical improvement. So, it probably wasn't on the BMV to-do list.
