The rights of Native Hawaiians have come under fire in the courts system more frequently in recent years.

Do you believe Native Hawaiians have a right to programs such as the Office of Hawaiian Affairs and Hawaiian Homelands?

Should there be more programs?

Do Hawaiians Accede to the greater economic power that is the U.S. and participate until superseded by those who practice ethnic homogeneity, and who can still carry ethnic identity.

Just wanted to share something. I did not grow up here. I was born and raised in Colorado Springs. I remember when I was in high school, we had a new student one year from Hawaii. I had never met any hawaiians before. He worked harder than most students, was in several school clubs, an honor student..the works! What I remember most about him and came to associate with the Hawaiian people was the manner in which he carried himself. He was always proud and held his head high. If an assignment required a five page paper, he turned in a ten page paper. Now I am a pilot and I think of him and his family every time I see the lady on the rudder of a Hawaiian Airliner. Her head is high. Her face beaming of beauty and pride. Never would my friend have insisted on rights above and beyond because of his heritage. He is now a successful attorney, his sister is a surgeon. There sense of pride in who they were and where they came from carried them far. There integrity, pride and work ethic made them Hawaiian. It wasnt because they were a minority. Whats my point? The true Hawaiian spirit is stronger than any legislation that could be passed. Fewer and fewer pure hawaiians exist in the mixed culture we live in. From what I have seen, special native Hawaiian rights are pointless. The Hawaiian spirit will prevail regardless.

My lineage dates back to the monarchy and to prove it has been a task on it's own.(that's for another entry) Will I have to provide proof of my ancestory to be eligible for these programs, should or when they become available for Hawaiians? Having to prove what I am, is not something I wish to do to receive assistance through programs aimed for "Native" Hawaiians.

I'm proud of my Hawaiian and Samoan heritage, but I don't want to be one of the many to turn another away, wether it was for education or assistance in a program, because their ancestory could not be proven.

Actually WiteFlash, you just proved my point. You are correct. The Date was 1959 on August 21. I have deliberately used that date not only in this blog, but in several others regarding this issue. Out of all of them, you are the only one who has ever caught on to that. Many protest and make a voice to be heard on the issue but dont know the true history behind it. It just seems like a passionate issue for people to get on a high horse about. Out of everyone I have ever talked to or written to and said that...YOU are the only one who knew that. Many forget that Hawaii petitioned to become a state long before US occupation. The point is simple.Be proud of your heritage but dont forget that you are all American citizens. Hawaii is now a state, just like California, New York, Alabama, and the others. Though we are a country of African heritage, British, Scottish, Russian, and any other nationality we can think of, we must not lose sight of the fact that we are one nation of one people. I do not deserve any other privaledges because of who my parents are than anyone else. Why dont we all try being Americans and human beings? Why are there Haoles, Chinks,Gooks, ****s, and Wet Backs? We all bleed the same, cry the same and have hopes and dreams. America, Hawaii and the world needs to stop drawing the line in the sand of preference and live together. We are all people and we all have rights that are special because we are Americans. If you think being American is so bad, take a trip to Iraq, South Africa, Ethiopia, or North Korea and let me know what you think then.

Actually, pilotsean, Hawaii became a State in 1959. I could take a huge shot at you and your comment about "not paying attention in history class", but instead I'll assume your error was just a typo (or perhaps the moderator changed the date on you!). Wink

As for the topic at hand, the more programs there are for Native Hawaiians, the better. Of course, that would mean there would be more things for non-Hawaiians to complain about.

I am sick and tired of this racist garbage. Time to welcome each and everyone of you to the 21st century. Since not a damn one of you was paying attention in history class, Hawaii became the 50th state in 1958. Thus, you are Americans. I am sick of hearing all this anti American sentiment and yet no one seems to mind the safety and constitutional rights the United states provides. No one seems to mind picking up the welfare check. Before you go tooting your horns, talk to the people of Guam that lived there during the Japanese invasion, and realize Hawaii was always one of their targets. Oh yeah thats right, you are all supermen and you could just gang bang or cage fight all the threats of the world away...my bad!! I am sure N. Korea and China will just run shaking in their boots at your small time gangs and affection for violence. I am sure those same attributes will serve Hawaii well in the global economy and Hawaii will be a world superpower. Have it your way. Good Luck! It is admirable to be proud of your heritage, but be careful not to bite the hand that feeds you. Success is easier achieved when one can tell the difference between fantasy and reality.

Yes are you kidding?! Yes there should be more programs. Of course. What do we call this place? Do we call it Japan, do we call it Tonga? No it's called Hawaii. There is such a small percentage of Hawaiians left, doesn't anyone just feel bad for us already?

In terms of what we who know Hawaii's history understand, not all in Hawaii are ethnic Hawaiians. In terms of state citizenship people of many ethnic backgrounds are Hawaiian citizens. This was even the case during the kingdom days with Americans, Brits and Chinese having citizenship. If you were born here (and are a citizen) and don't think your American, go ahead and don't pay your Federal and State taxes by next month and see what happens.

Jfamily, I am a little comfused with your statement. Do you mean to say that one race (and I can only assume you mean white people) was, at one time, better than another? And NO, we are not all americans as you put it. Just because we live here, it doesn't mean we are americans. Just like living in Hawaii, doesn't make you Hawaiian. Just a little food for thought for the misinformed. Smile lowkalboy

Ron, you really are awesome! Hawaii would be truely paradise if more people could think and reason like you. We are all AMERICANS now, one race isn't better than any other race anymore!!! All human beings should be treated the same way.

aloha, jfamily
