Do you think Kamehameha Schools should be forced to admit non-Hawaiians?

Is the fact that Hawaiians are not recognized by the federal government part of the problem?

*****WE ARE REOPENING THE DISCUSSION. REMEMBER TO STAY AWAY FROM PERSONAL ATTACKS ON OTHER POSTERS, VULGAR LANGUAGE (EVEN THOSE THAT ARE CHARACTERIZED (@#!)). PLEASE REVIEW THE DISCUSSION POLICY.*****

Kamehameha has alway accepted non-Hawaiians. The focus of the discussion here is "forced". Does Kamehameha always have to be "forced" to do anything? Does Kamehameha have to be relegated, or put in its place in order to participate as a part of America? To serve "all" in Hawaii, does Kamehameha need to become a Social Service Agency like Goodwill, Salvation Army or Weinberg Charities?

Before Kamehameha School except Non-Hawaiian students, they need to look at educating "ALL" students of Hawaiian blood, especially those who need the extra teaching. The way the trust was set up was to take care of these Hawaiian children who really need the help and who would benefit from the trust.

I could have sworn that Kamehameha Schools policy was that those of Hawaiian decent would get admited first and if there was any room then others would be allowed, and I've heard that the waitting list was several thousand still waiting to get in. So I would not call Kamehameha Schools racist but just full. If Non-Hawaiians want to be admitted then they should donate millions of dollars to build more space.

I can not believe that this is even an issue. First of all, from the stand point of genetics there are very few "Native Hawaiians" left. Many people on the island are of Filipino and Asian descent. Additionally, I doubt seriously that the King and Queen you speak of would have wanted blatant biggotry and discrimination to be practiced not only in the school but in the islands. Wow....so this is the "spirit of Aloha"? Acts of discrimination and in many cases violence towards Haoles by those who are not Hawaiian to begin with? Is that what the King and Queen would have wanted? Segregation......welcome to the 21st century Hawaii. It isnt cool anymore. And if you think otherwise, you have no right using the word "Aloha".

We can sit here and argue forever about the intent of the will, and the "beauty" of allowing for Hawaiians to attend their own school. However, there is something missing from this: Hawaii is part of the US. And as such, it should be held accountable to the same laws as everywhere else.

Admitting students to a school based solely on race is by definition RACIST! We have laws to protect against this very thing. In fact, the Supreme Court recently ruled that schools in Seattle and Kentucky were not allowed to place students in schools based solely on race. So why should Hawaii (again, I stress: a state of the US) be allowed to do so? I am sure Kam Schools knows this very well, which is why they rushed to settle the latest suit as quietly and privavtely as possible before it went to the Supreme Court. It seems fairly obvious that the school does not want the Court to hear the case because they know their policy is illegal and they want to avoid being told they must stop their racist policies.

I grew up in the South. When I left there 22 years ago. I left because I hated the rapant racism that still occurs down there. I knew that racists lived elsewhere, but was convinced the American South was the worst. Now that I have lived for so long in Hawaii, I am not so sure. Hawaii may well be the most racist place in the country...and that is sad. We are supposed to live in paradise. When will we start acting like it?

What is the deal with this rosen guy? Why is he making such a big deal? I know this discussion may not go far except here on the hawaiichannel.com but if people are reading this then i hope these 'messeages' go far!!!! I am not hawaiian but I've lived here all my life. The funding of the school and whatever else was left behind from the Princess. Why VIOLATE something that was left behind for HER people?!?! If some people are making such a big deal about Kamahameha school what about the OTHER schools.. that only except kids with HIGH SAT scores?? I don't see law suits going after that! Those schools have requirements and certain policies too, So why pick on a Kamehameha school? I've never had a problem with it... other schools are fine with me... education is the same every where... maybe different policies or a different way of teaching but a school is a school. Its how a student carries out the PRIDE of the school. Let Kamehameha KEEP its policies. Don't change it... who cares what rosen says... it was a WILL left behind.

When i first read and answered oromeen13s letter, something bothered me, but i couldn't figure out what it was. I just got through reading it again and now i know what was bothering me. oromeen13 stated that the ceo of kamehameha is a non hawaiian, well guess what? the ceo of kamehamea is a kamehameha school graduate.what that is telling me is that this person doesn't even know what a hawaiian or non-hawaiian is. I guess you get one big poke in your okole for that one. Please, in the future, engage your brain, before you disengage your mouth,or in this case, your fingers. Mahalo, Kale

AGAIN????? When will the time come for these outsiders to stop attacking Hawaiian rights. We as KANAKA MAOLI must not sit down and do nothing. If it means all that support Hawaiian rights and love the Hawaiian culture take another march all over town, then IT SHOULD BE DONE. WE MUST NOT STAY QUIET! WE MUST BE HEARD! I?m sick of this. Every time I turn on the news there is always some issue dealing with the rights of the Hawaiian people. Kamehameha Schools is the LAST RIGHT for the hawaiian people.

aloha. koa

Regarding the teachers being only of Protestant religion - I believe this was challenged before and deemed legal. Anyone know more of this challenge please inform us of the facts.

If I recall correctly (and I am quite anal) then this WAS challenged and over-ruled by a non-Protestant teacher and their attorney and the school was forced to hire the teacher.
