What are the best things about the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival?

Do you go to the event? Describe the atmosphere.

Do you think the right winners were given the titles?

Many of the people watching the Merrie Monarch was upset that the Merrie Monarch Court was not shown or even acknowledged on the program. What a shame.

Kindest Regards,

Puakenikeni

In these so called hula festivals or competitions, where the "judges" determine who the winners are... "It's a who's who, and what can you do for me game." I've heard one of the Kumu say, "we always need to keep in GOOD GRACES with the judges." Go figga.

Dump Kimo Kahoano. Keep Manu Boyd. Until you can pronounce our Hawaiian words correctly, give the microphone to someone who can. And while we're at it, bring in judges who are fresh in mind and spirit, and able to judge on merit rather than on who's related to whom. The best thing that's happened recently is the return of Johnny Lum Ho. We need Kumu Hula who are not afraid of pushing the envelope. Ditto Mark Keali'i Ho'omalu, Kaha'i Topolinski, Patrick Makuakane, Nalani Keale, and many more. Other than that, it's still the best ever.

Aloha, Maluhia Makuakai

Aloha, I have never had the privilege of going to a Merrie Monarch Festival, but imagine that it is Uncomparable in displaySmile I do wonder in some instances if the judges see and hear something different then we did on TV? Regardless, I believe in tradition and culture. Surprisingly, the Federal Government hasn't taken this from us too?

Aloha, My compliments to Daisha and Leia Leong daughters of my nephew Willington Leong and daughters of Hawaii. Thank you both for the touch of Hawaii, The Merrie Monarch Festival 2003, that belongs to a home of a different place and a different time...a touch of Aloha that I am unable to go back to... too long in the past and too far away in time. I wish only happiness and the best of what freedom can give you both... with all my aloha and my strength of purpose. I will always fight to keep our Hawaii a part of my "Rockwell" memories... *smile* Always your Uncle D, Honomu, HI 96720 circa 1950's

Aloha Jennifer. Maika'i no!!! We are so proud of you and your lovely performances. Such excellence, and such a joy to watch. You had me smiling. Congratulaions and Mahalo!!

And HulaGirl41, I enjoyed your email very much. With eight years of competing, no wonder you show such wisdom and a display of principals. With hula being represented by young ladies like you and Jennifer, we are in very good shape.

As a participant in this year's competition, I feel the need to comment on a few things. This was my 8th year of competing, and I truly feel that Merrie Monarch is not what it used to be. Although I truly feel all the halau did an excellent job, I am hesitant to admit my content with the results.

I understand that the judging is based on a tabulated system of numerous categories, but I am left to wonder if each judge bases these individual scores on a specific guideline that is both fair, and appropriate.

Clearly, there are halau that base their entire presentation strictly on score sheets (ie, what judges have scored them high and low on in previous years), which is probably the wiser for winning's sake, but this brings up questions regarding loyalties and moralistic beliefs. Are we saying that it's acceptable for halau to "alter" their style and teachings, in order to score rightfully in the judge's eyes, and if so, should this reflect at all on the judge's themselves. We regard this panel as respected Kumu Hula, well-versed in Hawaiian Culture, and would like to think they value THEIR Kumu, and their Kumu's teachings, and would not stray away from that solely for winning purposes.

Inevitably, in hula and halau, there will be change, but when does it stop being natural evolution and start becoming "convenient."

I personally, would rather have the lower scores, than compromise my respect for my Kumu, my Kumu's Kumu, and their teachings, which I feel extremely priviledged to have learned.
