A hoax about a major earthquake hitting the islands followed by a destructive tsunami swept through the islands on Nov. 26.

How did you hear about it? When did you find out it was a hoax?

This tread just tells me how much people fell asleep in a simple high school science class. Come on, it almost sounded like the radio play "war of the world" in 1938. The day when science can predict a earthquake, that will be one of the first stories on the news.

It was Sunday and it had been a long day. I was out with a friend visiting another friend. About 5PM. First her phone rang and then his cell phone went off. It was other friends calling us about the coming Earthquake 9.0 and Tsunami. We all looked at each other because we all know that you can't predict and Earthquake and you need an Earthquake to have a Tsunami. We were just about done so we headed home. I did sdecide to Top off the Tank and get some cash from the ATM. Other then that I was pretty much ready. I do not shop on Sunday so that was not an issue. When I went to the Gas Atation it was busy maybe 4 cars deep. When I left it was about 100 cars deep strung out in the Waianae Mall Parking Lot. All that in about 20 min. Then I went home it is now 8 PM. My Son meets me at the door. Says his mother had him move all the Emergency Stuff into the Van. I say. Dosen't she know you can't predict and Earthquake. He says yes I told her but it does not seem to matter. I told him good job thank you and went inside. Mom is getting ready for work. Daughter is having an anexity attack. The trouble with this I figure out is that although they know what the rumor says is going to happen can't happen with fore knowledge. The rumor reports keep coming from realible people, well known, well educated and very trustworthy. This can get you thinking. I was tired so I went to bed said wake me up when it happens. Mom went off to work, called about 9:30 from the car saying that KSSK and Civil Defense said it was a Hoax. So my daughter was relieved and so forth and so on. I was in some trouble for not caring enough but I don't care because I held to the facts not the fiction. Besides I live on very high ground and other then being prepared nothing much you can do about it anyway. So its was a case of people see people do. Low trust in Goverment and HECO and nervous hysteria evan among the smart people. ON the up side people were orderly and for the most part diden't buy anything they would not have bought at some later point anyway.

I just read on the TheHawaiiChannel.com article that the "hoax" began around 7 am on Sunday and that now the authorities realized that they should have stopped or aleviated the fears earlier than 8 pm. If that is true then the authorities are as much to blame as the instigators. That is unbelieveable to think that they knew about it for so long and did nothing. Shameful...

My mother recieved a phone call from her sister, my mother was told that a earthquake was going to occur between the hours of 8pm and 9pm. Do you how difficult it is trying to explain to family that it is impossible to forecast a earthquake without laughing hysterically? How cruel can one be to allow a rumor like that snowball through a community already anxious of earthquakes? I would love to find the person(s) who started this rumor and publicly humiliate them some how...suggestions anyone?

This is the second time it happened. A few weeks ago my friends in Waianae called me with the exact same info that a 9.0 earthquake was going to happen. They said they had direct news from the Big Island. I did not believe it and tried to tell them nobody could predict a earthquake. Then they called me again last night to tell me about the same news and that it must be true because everybody was rushing to the gas station and stores. The Big Island seemed to be the key where everything started.
