Aloha In Hawaiian culture there is a concept of "Ho'oponopono". Please do not ever condemn or judge Kumu Chinky Mahoe. Chinky Mahoe is one of our most treasured and cherished kumu with a great deal of knowledge, creativity and reverence for the art of hula and Hawaiian culture. He has atoned for his mistake and I am sure it will never recur. In the spirit of "Ho'oponopono", I ask please no more judgment and no more comments on Chinky's past. "Let he is without sin cast the first stone". Mahalo

What do you mean by 13 year olds? I know they do perform at MM at this age.

Mahalo to all the planners and volunteers for their hard work to make the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival come alive each year. Auntie Luana Kawelu and her band of hard working committee members and volunteers should be commended. This year, I was lucky to get tickets and let me tell you there is nothing like watching MM in-person. Congratulations to all the halau. Your beautiful costumes and gorgeous flowers used in your performances was a sight to behold. The fragrance in the air was breathtaking. It was so obvious that each halau brought to MM their love of hula and the Hawaiian culture. I was so happy to see both Auntie Dottie Thompson and Uncle George Naope still looking good. You still get 'um. It was an amazing experience for me; one I will never forget it. I am already making plans for 2007!

This is in response to Hula_Girl regarding the comments about Chinky Mahoe. What kuleana do you have to pass judgement over Chinky Mahoe? Have you not sinned in the past? A sin is a sin, no matter how big or small. Also, how do you know he works with children? Merrie Monarch is not a keiki competition. I do not dance with Chinky Mahoe, nor do I know him on a personal basis, however before you make statements against a man and his sins, lay your sins out for others to judge you.

I agree with every word that you said. The Journey is whats important, That is what our Kumu instills in us, and reminds us of before each competition. Although it's nice to win,we dont go with an intention to win. The days, weeks, months leading up to competition is what truely does matter. You're not gonna grow in knowledge by dancing on that stage, you're not gonna become a better dancer by dancing on that stage, you're learning very little by being up there. The knowledge you gain takes place prior to getting up there. And thats what i feel is most important. Mahalo to the california and texas Halaus for keeping the hula and our culture alive away from the islands.I congratulate each and every one of you for the knowlegde that you have gained on your journey. Hope to see you all back next year!
Aloha, Nohea

I saw a lot of the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival and as always I enjoyed it. The first three years I taped the programs.I think it is great to have events of this nature that show the culture and keep the dance alive. My Daughter (15) took lessons for awhile but lot interest.I am not knowledgeable enough to say who won or weather the judges were fair. I do know what I liked and what cought my interest and attention and to me rocked. As in any event that is judged as opposed to scoring points there is always room for talk. That is the price of doing business in events of that nature. Which is why I bowl, play tennis, Golf, and other things that envolve scoring points as opposed to being awarded points. That does not take away from the grandure of the event. I have nothing but good things to say about the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival and look forward to next year. It would be nice if some of the people that posted on this topic would post on other topics as well. Mahalo to those that worked hard to make the events happen.

Mahalo nui for everyone's comments. The past 20 years have been a wonderful growing experience for all of us. We continue to make new friends and reconnect with ohana. Although we didn't come home with a trophy, what's most important to us is the journey that we took and the experiences that we've enjoyed. Trophies grow dust, experience lasts a lifetime and continues through generation to generation. Merrie Monarch affords us the opportunity to visit the wahi pana of the mele so that our students can learn the true essence of their hula. Mahalo.
