A KITV/Honolulu Star-Bulletin poll shows strong support for a planned rail transit project.

What are your thoughts on building a rail transit system on Oahu?

Previous discussion issue: (The Honolulu City Council is set to approve a tax hike the General Excise Tax from 4 percent to 4.5 percent. The hike to 4.5 percent actually is a 12.5 percent increase some say could cost each family $450 in extra taxes each year.)

Why did the Mayor not look into having one main rail going into town that other lines could connect to it from the heavily populated areas to cut down on commute time and stations. Then place parking areas next to the stations that could have bus stations for the children and a shopping area. Faster commute time, parking, shopping, and transportation for the kids all in one.

The mayor only wants to be recognized in building the rail transit for his own fame. He is not looking out to help the people of Hawaii. Our tax dollars are going to be flushed down the toilet. Please remind me who's actually benefiting from this project??

I disagree in building the rail transit, spending billions of our tax dollars on it. Our mayor fails to inform, us (the people), that he is going to raise our state taxes to pay for this RAIL TRANSIT. We will also have to pay for higher gas prices too. Our mayor continues to mislead the people of Hawaii. When will the truth be revealed?

Aloha, Johanna

What good is it to spend billions of dollars on a project that does not benefit the citizens that need it most? I thought the purpose of this mass transit project was to help the traffic on the roads and highways. Who affects traffic more- the people traveling to Ala Moana Center or the students traveling to the UH Manoa? Who would benefit more- the residents in Kapolei or the citizens living out on the leeward side? Mayor Mufi is pushing this project because he wants this rail system to be a Monument to him. He is not doing this for the people, if he was he would fight for a proper system that would help the most needy.

It does not appear that the route chosen for the transit line will alleviate traffic. Working parents have to multi-task and need their cars to pick-up kids, run errands, etc. Transit route should focus on those people who only have to get from point A to point B and back, without detours and who normally travel during peak traffic hours. These are the students at UH.

I don't know why we even discuss the rail transi. It is always the same - vote for it - have the taxpayers pay for it - then argue about it - at last kill it. Politics as usual in Hawaii.

I agree with peaceray's thoughts.

As for me, I would use the transit to get to the airport, especially on long holiday weekends when parking at the airport is hard to find.

I live in town and would use my car (not the transit) to get to Pearlridge, Kapolei, Waianae, etc. More convenient.

If transit goes to Salt Lake instead of the airport, I would drive or take a taxi to the airport before I use the transit.

Bad on Romy for protecting a small interest group instead of seeing the larger picture.

cheers to missjanet that is SO true - as a resident - longtime one of the leeward side - I have seen so much rapid expansion of homes - here and minimal work done to the roadways - folks who live in this area used to leave at 5 am now leave at 3 and 4 - it is bone chilling to see so many homes coming up - do you realize how long it takes to get to town ? four hours - and three to four buses - one way - yup

Bus route folks make routes and buses which do not connect right - we have too few buses in the leeward area specifically Ewa Beach.

Makaha has a C express - every half hour daily - you can count on it - Ewa Beach - has an express - early am and late evening - oh yeah an express daily to Waikiki -

Too bad for folks who have to go shopping and have to wait for the 42 - your foods will spoil - it is okay - most folks don't complain.

We have a bus 42 which will run til 1am if you have to work late - but buses don't run all the way - to the older section of Ewa Beach - no money in that I was told - so most if you work that time - walk two miles at one in the morning - sad huh ? NOt safe either.

The rail transit will service leeward areas and a portion of town - will have 30 scheduled stops along the way - wow just like the bus - will it be faster ? LOL

We had before a park n ride - did not work - why ? why should you park your vehicle if no one will watch it for you ?

NO ONE has really said in the Council the whole thing - just in little bits - estimated costs - 4 billion ? -

anything on maintenance ? cost of ridership fees ? how often the fees will go up ? (remember how much bus fees were hiked up?) lots they don't tell you -

NOTHING is really thought through - it's a new toy The Mayor wants - and the Council wants

Sadly none of them will get my vote -

The Mayor and the Council just killed my enthusiasm for so much -

sorry to say -

BICie out

Instead of arguing about rail transit, how about getting to the root of the problem. We have homes miles away from jobs, food sources, and supplies. We have become a society who have fogotten our roots as hunter-gathers. Everybody needs to start planing how to start hydroponic gardens to supply themselves with food, develop skills to work from home on the internet, or develop micro-businesses within bike riding distance of their homes. Then we wont have to clog the roadways of hawaii. Why spend millions of dollars for a transit system when its our lifestyle that causing the problem. Of course people won`t change because they don`t want to give up a lifestyle of "buy, buy, buy". Sad isn`t it.

I think that this rail transit plan was designed mainly to help those living out in the Leeward coast to get to/from town/UH.

There are already Waikiki Express buses for the Ewa Beach, Waipahu, and Kalihi workers that operates everyday during the am/pm hours.

The reason I'm concerned about the cost to build and run this system is that many unfortunate families cannot afford it. This is a high cost of living state as is with the prices of gas, food, rent, insurance, and medicine increasing beyond what most families can afford.
