Hawaii's housing situation has sent prices "Through the Roof." Tell us your stories of how it has been to search for a home, sell a home or survive payments.
And what about those property taxes?

well i am a loan officer and the prices are ridiculous! foreclosures are skyrocketing and it's really sad to see so many families out on the street. i have many clients who just don't qualify and have to be turned down too, they aren't that financially literate.

To any developer who puts people into the street in order to make windfall profits by recasting his building. (Old,and Section 8 Tenents, for College Student Housing, without any real structural change). Or tearing down lowcost housing for high rise condos. Screw you long, Hard, and Deep.

Garyk01 - Comparing taxes between several jurisdictions is most difficult. For example, in three of the four localities that I have lived in, in the mainland US, realestate taxes went for the operation of the schools - not so here in Hawaii where school funding comes from the State's General Fund (fed by income tax, general excise tax, etc) and the Counties use the realestate taxes for other purposes (that is as close as I can get when stating where realestate taxes actually go ).
I do sympathize with many Oahu (C&C of Honolulu) homeowners. I just received my new property assessment/valuation and my estimated realestate taxes for next year are 67% higher than I paid this year. (The 67% is not a typo - I assure you - even though the media used a figure of about 26% on average when discussing it several weeks ago). This large increase is not because there has been no reassessment of value for a lengthy period of time. My property was reassessed and taxes increased just two years ago (and that is taxes based upon the new value figure, not a tax rate increase).

I have to say that the price of homes is getting crazy in Hawaii, but your taxes are extreamly low compared to my home town of Edmonton Alberta Canada. I have a $200,000.00 home and my tax bill is $2398.00 a year for it for just city taxes, then we pay provincial and federal taxes as well.

Yeah, Awesomeron. Some mainland trailer parks are really not too bad. I've seen some well kept with gardens etc. If things get too crowded with tents simply moving around , the trailer parks would be the less miserable sight.
Face it...rents are unreasonable and it's asking "poor" residents of Hawaii to "Get lost..paint yourselves with camoflauge..organize for the French Revolution Part II...forgive my irreverent humor, but what do they expect these people to do?

The county representatives and planners have created this mess in developing affordable housing. How can we hold them accountable and have council members of each island explain the hodgepodge planning that has priced our children out of the market.
A 2.8 million dollar condominium on Maui is indicative of the attitudes that has permeated our culture....Sad but true...

Aloha: As newlyweds some 30 yers ago, we were fortunate enough to have family property and we were able to build our home. We feel for the younger generation who are faced with being out-priced in the housing market. Our kids had to come home for awhile until they could manage to get a downpayment and move to a neighborhood that was affordable. They saved for a few years and were able to move out before the housing prices (now) were out of sight. Just a word of encouragement to all the ohana. Support the younger generation by letting them stay with you until a little longer. I am sure they want to be on there own and you support will help them along.
Have a great day in paradise!
