Mufi Hannemann won the election. What do you think he will be able to accomplish?
Which candidate do you think is most qualified to lead Honolulu?
So far, former council members Duke Bainum, Frank Fasi and Mufi Hannemann have risen to the top in recent polls.
What do you think of the campaign ads?

awsomeron: First of all no one claimed that Mufi hadn't won the election fair and square, he did, it was just close and one could say that there was ugliness from both sides along the way. Secondly, as for the locals voting him in are you talking about ethnic populations for as far as I know if we live here, we are all locals. If you are talking about a specific ethnic population then you can't tell me that of the 48% votes that Duke got, none came from that ethnic group. Third, if Duke really tried to buy the election he should have done a better job of giving the money to the voters. I could have used it.

Congratulations Mayor elect Hannemann. I wish you the best in running Honolulu it will be a very difficult job, but you've shown you can take difficult situations and turn them around. I was a very harsh critic. Maybe I don't understand politics, but the race is over and you won. Congratulations to you, all of your staff, family, and supporters.
Thanks for my say.

Mufi Won fair and square. The locals came out and voted for him. Kept it close and the Weside put him over the top. A lot of hard work and about half the money Duke spent trying to buy City Hall. We have computer and high speed modems on the Weside but rumors about his wife did not cost Duke Votes. Duke cost Duke Votes. He paid dearly on the Weside for that land stuff he did when he was on the city council. The right choice was made by the people so get over it.

Although I wasn't one of them, I would like to congratulate all those who were pulling for Mr. Hannemann and Mr. Hannemann himself. The talk was of a divided country over the presidency, but we have just seen there was far more of a division for the Mayor's race. The optimist in me hopes that Mr. Hannemann will live up to the promises he made and that he is indeed fiscally conservative as the times call. The pessimist in me says that it will be easier to blame and say I told you so if Mr. Hannemann fails to live up to his promise. With that said I'm glad political talk will probably ebb for awhile.

I wanted to add something in response to Mr. Bainum's claims that the only thing that has altered his lead in the past few weeks was the story about his wife (which I, and no one in my family, had heard about until Bainum kept calling our house to deny it). Even then, we did not hear the story, just several more irritating phone calls telling us to ignore it.
Like many other people I have spoken with, we were FED UP with the CONSTANT phonecalls from his campaign. One day a woman called us out of the blue from his campaign and TOLD, not asked, us to vote for Mr. Bainum. After each subsequent phonecall, we asked the person on the other end to STOP CALLING US (if it was live, and several times called the campaign offices if it was a recording)... In the end they called NINE times (8 times after we asked for no more calls!)
Instead of honoring our wish, each time we got attitude and comments like "we have a right to call whoever we wish." For a campaign to call us repeatedly, TELL us who to vote for, and be rude when we ask them to stop, reflects poorly on a candidate's character.
This arrogant and disrespectful attitude is what moved me to CHANGE my vote (and, yes, I had strongly leaned toward Mr. Bainum until this time). Talking about this with family and friends, others were similarly incensed. Our experience was not an isolated one. I would not discount this factor when considering why Mr. Hannenman picked up so many voters in the final weeks of the campign.

I wish to respond to all of you who think you know what happened to this old man and his caregiver. Because this happened to have happened to my wifes family, the Murasaki's. Malia's reporting was correct, the documents are correct and the other letters and documents that will come out will stand on their own. Say what you want about a man living on the other side of the country raising 7 kids and supporting his family, but until you know him DO NOT make assumptions of his love for his father. Why do you think he hired someone to take care of him? How does a man who can't "hold a pencil" write checks or legal documents. The son hired a caregiver to take care of his fathers needs, not be taken. The arrangements were made so the fathers funds would support him, not others. Just wait and see...this isn't over.

Hawaiiguy1 I'm shocked...more smears and innuendo! The only thing I'm guilty of is plagerism...I liked the sound of it...."Jennifergate." Besides if I was trying to plant a story with the legitimate media I'd have to fly to California.

Hey Keith aka "Bob476" aka "Adman"
If you're going to claim to not be one in the same as "Adman", you should probably not post the exact same messages on this board and the Honolulu Advertiser Board.
I mean, "Jennifergate." Come on. I thought you were smarter than that.
But then again, you're weak attempts to get this story introduced into legitimate media is nothing short of pathetic. You're guy is going down.

This is in Sunday's Advertiser. I think all parties will agree to it's advice. Aloha!
EDITORIAL Don't let cheap tactics influence your vote
It's a scenario that has become all too common in recent Hawai'i elections, one that seems to start increasingly earlier in the campaign.
Look for last-minute mailers and other political ads that are particularly damaging and unproven to be circulated in the waning days of the campaign.
Consider this: If the information is legitimate, why does it only surface when there's no real time to study it, respond to it or assess the facts?
The people who peddle these hit pieces are counting on our gullibility and our ability to think the worst of people.
An increasingly pervasive element ? and one to be particularly careful about ? is unverified Internet pieces. Anyone can say anything on the Internet; that doesn't make it true. And these pieces are not subjected to same rigor of fact checking and balance applied to mainstream news organization reports.
Listen to what the candidates say on the record, and make your decisions that way.
Particularly troubling are mailers and brochures often put out by the political parties "without the consent" of the candidate. While such brochures don't often outright lie, they take specific facts and twist them out of proportion.
Sadly, many voters don't have the time to sort out the facts cited in these brochures. In the case of smear tactics, voters either conclude the candidate is tainted or the other campaign was spreading old and harmful stories. Either way, somebody loses.
So when you go to the polls Tuesday, think about the issues that are important. Think about where each candidate stands. And vote on the facts.
Thanks for my say.

There are three elements of the Malia Zimmerman article that don't add up:
1. When a COMPLAINT is filed, there need be no evidence. The complaint will always be a part of public record. For example, I could file a complaint that Jasmine Trias kidnapped my baby. Absolutely riduculous right? However, when the courts examine the complaint, they realize that there is no evidence and no CHARGES are filed. Malia Zimmerman herself states that no charges were filed against Bainum's wife.
2. The ordeal happened years ago. Why is it being published right before the election? Does anyone else think the timing is a little suspicious.
3. Malia Zimmerman was Sam Slom's mistress and cited as a contributing factor in Slom's divorce. The former Mrs. Slom made a comment to the effect of "He can have Malia's house keys or mine." Sam Slom, as we all know, is endorsing Mufi. Yet another coincidence?
And lastly, in regards to HawaiiReporter's accusation that the files on the case are missing - they're not. The article states that the person asking for the files had to wait 30 minutes. You guys know that the government is a model of inefficiency. I went down and got my requested copies in 53 minutes. I don't consider that "missing," simply delayed.
