QUESTION: I will post the same concerns I had to you as I did to Amos (Quick). I have a few thoughts about the school system in general. First of all, the "security officers" on campus have loaded firearms. Most are young, and inexperienced. My worst fear is, if a student for whatever reason, made a "wrong" move, it is very possible we could have a dead child on our hands. Secondly, I hope you will remind the teachers and administrators working in the schools, that being nice to a kid doesn't cost the state or county anything. I personally feel that a lot of the reason kids drop out of school is due to the attitudes of the "staff" and being treated disrespectfully. Last, I think it is important to remember that we have to remind our kids AND TEACHERS to represent like someone with some intelligence raised them. Whether it's at school or in the community. What are your thoughts? Good luck on your election.
ANSWER: Thank you for your comments. Education is a very important issue and is one of the top priorities of my campaign. I am glad you brought up the issue of disrespect of teachers to students. Often times, the School Board, who is responsible for the day to day operation of the schools, like to answer problems in the schools by using the excuse of funding. Applying the golden rule costs nothing, and I believe can solve problems. Discipline is an issue in the Guilford County School system. The SRO's (school resource officers) are a valuable asset. Weapons are certainly an issue, so I think it is very important we have good competent and experienced people serving. I am confident the Sheriff's Department in Guilford County is doing a good job. As a County Commissioner, I think we have the fiscal responsibility of making sure our School Board and the schools are held accountable for their actions. School funding makes up over 40% of the Guilford County budget so deserves some commitment of time and communication between the Commissioners and the School Board. Thank you for your question. Sincerely, Mike Winstead, JR
