ONLY RESPONSES THAT INCLUDE A FIRST NAME, LAST NAME AND CITY ARE ELIGIBLE TO BE USED IN WYFF 4 NEWSCASTS.

A new charge is pending in the case of Wendie Schweikert -- the teacher accused of having sex with an 11-year-old student. What steps should schools take to protect students from authority figures who could potentially harm them?

I think once you touch a child in a sexual manner you should go to jail for the rest of your life, no second chances! I am so sick of people, men and women destroying the childhood of so many. This is a sickness we cannot accept in society. It is incurable and for the safety of the children a lifetime of incarceration should be the only punishment available and I bet then you would see these pedophiles show some restraint! They do not fear the system enough to bother trying to stop themselves.

What is this - an epidemic? I've read more stories in the past month about teachers having sex with students than I have in the past 10 years put together! These teachers have not only taken gross advantage of these students, they have violated a very sacred trust. We send our children to school not just for academics, but we know it helps develop social skills as well. Teachers that molest students are robbing our students of the security of having a safe place to develop academically and socially. These teachers need to be punished to the fullest extent of the law, not just probation where they can then contact their victim AGAIN via Internet or instant messaging or text messaging, as in another recent case. These few, twisted "bad apples" are really making it tough for the many, many dedicated and excellent teachers we have out there.

Thank you, Penny

I am a 6th grade teacher and am appalled and disgusted by what this woman has done. I think first that the school should have a strict policy against a student and teacher being in the classroom alone. Teachers should really be doing this on their own for their own protection. Also, parents can make drop in visits to the classroom, that way the teacher knows the parent is aware of how the school and classrooms work and will be more aware of anything that seems out of place.

This is VERY sad...and her teaching license should be permanently revoked. Surely this child was failed many times over! It is important that each one of us protect our own children and every other child in our life. We must teach our children what is ok and what is NOT ok. And we must live that out to them as well. There is SO MUCH that TOO MANY kids see...on TV and in relationships around them. Grown-ups doing what they want with whomever they want. It does have ramifications! Multiply this child's broken life, only God knows how many times over. We must all 'wake up' and make it safer for all of them!

Sincerely, Sue

This is just uncalled for. Our children's leaders and teachers should be setting an example for them to live by. Our children should be able to feel protected when they are with adults whether it be their parents, the neighbors, chruch leaders,or teachers, but we have become a society that must warn our childern that there are people that are out to harm them . We have to teach them to be on guard, and to talk to us as parents and grandparents if someone is touching them or showing them materials that they should not be looking at.. We must pray over our childern daily that they will be protected from these monsters.

No one can ever excuse what she did to that child. Now Certain leaders in the community want to place the blame on what happen to the Principal of the school for no other reason that creating tensions in the community. Why don't these leaders channel their energy toward Helping this child and parents and stop trying to make this a black\ white issue. Enough damage has been done to this victim and now it's time for us as a community to come together and ask for programs which will teach our Children as well as parents the signs of sexual abuse. Maybe with such a program we can teach our children not to be afraid when someone they trust does something wrong to them.

It's really scary and sad that a long-term teacher in our state committed these acts. It's even more scary and sad that any signs that she was capable of this went either ignored or unnoticed. This situation needs to be a wake up call for parents and administration to keep a closer hold of protection on our children and to be constantly aware of who we allow to care for them.

In my high school it was common knowledge that at least one teacher/coach was having sex with a student (His ex-wife was a former student of his).

However, little or nothing was done until he was caught with a student in a class room.

Frankly, I feel it's the responsibility of the school's administration and other teachers to protect its students at all times.

If there is any type of suspicion there should be an investigation. Although a witch-hunt is something to be discouraged, vigilance is the key to safety.
