The University of Colorado at Boulder has a non-discrimination policy that protects students, faculty and staff from discrimination based on race, color, national origin, sex, disability, creed, religion or veteran status. Several regents want to add sexual orientation to the policy.

But a Republican legislator and a Christian group are fighting the proposal, calling it a "socially radical stance disapproved by ... many taxpayers who fund your budget and the parents who entrust you with their children."

Who do you agree with?

Special rights or protection is the question. And /or does one give/lead to the other. My expierience is they already have it, but in America ask and you shall recieve. If what one believes by his actions is to be protected why aren't all beliefs protected? That is what is called discrimination.

sincerly, Rainman

I believe that CU"S Gay student body and staff should be protected from discrimination, contrary to popular belief this is not something that rubs off by exposure to or association thereof.

Regardless if taxpayers like it or not, if you like it or not, if GOD approves of it or not, all people deserve a fair shot at everything. Besides that, who is it exactly that speaks for GOD, has this republican been personally appointed by the man upstairs to speak on his behalf.....I dont know for sure, but isn't GOD all loving? Doesnt he look down in shame on BIGGOTS. There is only one thing though I would like to see changed, how about a scholarship for a plain old white kid whose parents happen to make some money, but not enough to send their kid to an OVERPRICED STATE INSTITUTION such as CU. I have seen everything else, african american, chinese american, cuban american, handicapped, red headed, poor, etc. Not that there is anything wrong with having some kind of incentive/aid program for any of these groups, but what about me, just white, average intelligence and in my own right, poor?

Ah, how homophobia rears its ugly head.

I can recall how just fifty years ago the issue would've been blacks. Blacks getting rights. Blacks having civil liberties and blacks being protected from discrimination. Blacks being allowed to attend the same functions as whites. Blacks simply having the same opportunity to be treated fair and just.

I am not homosexual. However, simply because I'm straight doesn't mean I can't sympathize with homosexuals and bisexuals. I've known homosexuals in the past and let me tell you all something -- they're no different from you or me (well, aside from the ocassional lisp). It's wrong and cruel to put them in the same category as pedophiles and cop killers, Joe Jack, because I've never met a single gay person who abused children or killed cops. However, I've met many straight parents who beat and raped their children, and you might want to check out profiles on cop killers -- who, by the way, are typically straight males. (And how many of you are aware that Leonardo da Vinci was, in fact, gay? Would you condemn his genius simply because he liked guys over girls?)

I don't quite understand how what gays do is "sick" or "wrong". No one can give me a reason other than "that's what my redneck hick preacher taught me in Sunday school". Eyuck, eyuck. "It's unnatural" would be the second answer. Really? Wild animals have been observed to have homosexual relationships -- everything from buffalo to giraffes to birds. And said relationships weren't "just sex", either: these homosexual animals were observed to have life-long bonds.

So, really, give me another reason.

However, that's my rant regarding the neanderthal stupidity that falls in the same category as racism and misogyny. (By the way, JVan, it's spelled c-a-u-c-a-s-i-a-n.) Maybe we should give all them ****s back their own water fountains and schools; and maybe all them purty ladies should go back to child-rearin' and kitchen cleanin'.

Do I believe gays should be protected from discrimination? Yes. I don't believe special groups should get *special* treatment, however. If a nation has to declare a month as Black History Month or declare a Gay Day, then that already reveals its problems with integrating said groups into its culture. We should no more have a Gay Day than a White Heterosexual Christian Male Bigot Day.

I don't think that gay's should have right's anywhere. What they're doing is wrong and very sick.

Thanks J

I am so tired of hearing about certain interest groups wanting "special rights." I have never considered myself to be a predjudice person, but unfortunately I guess I am one. As a caucasion, I feel as though I no longer have any "special rights." Everyone wants thier own holiday, or parade, or wants recognition for thier race, sexual orientation, religion or whatever thier cause may be. Since society has become a bunch of bleeding heart liberals, I think as a caucasion I deserve special rights and a parade. Put that in your pipe and smoke it until the cows come home.

Why don't we just come up with a bill saying that you cannot discr. against anyone for anything? I am so tired of hearing people whine about discr. Personally I don't want to hear it anymore. Just because you say that someone cannot discr. doesn't mean people won't. It is like a teacher saying be nice. It has very little effect.

Why should gays become ANOTHER protected class of people? Are they harassed because they represent decaying morals and deviant behavior, or are they harassed because they publicly display these socially unacceptable acts/attitudes?

If we give them special rights (classifying them as a protected class), what comes next? A protected class for pedophiles and cops that kill innocent civilians?

As a basic matter of fairness, sexual orientation should be added to the CU Non-discrimination Clause. Hatred has no place in a civilized institution that we value. Since CSU and Coors Brewing Company, as well as many other colleges and companies, have tried to protect homosexuals from gay bashing for many years, why should real Christians object if CU is as civil? True Christians are t

I agree with the Board of Regents that gays and lesbians should be included as a protected group. I am a former campus minister at a midwestern university, and I have seen how important it is to glbt folks to know they have recourse in the event of harassment, and important for others to know the glbt folks have university support. I also know that many Christians do not agree with the religious right's need to exclude glbt folks.
