A hostage situation inside Platte Canyon High School ends in the tragic death of a 16-year-old student.

The gunman kills himself before the SWAT team gets to him.

Park County Sheriff Fred Wegener said his community will never be the same again.

Please share your thoughts about this story, this community, this situation.

Tony, I would add that my assailant was a teenager, and thus unlikely to be trained. So,the knife he held to me and cut me with would have killed me just as surely.BTW, my counsellor told me last week that I will need another year or so of sessions, but I am well on the mend. Thanks for your comments.

Teachers with guns is NOT the answer. Neither are metal detectors in schools. WE AS STUDENTS can form a bond together and act as one! Let's bring back integrity, character, and trust to our schools. It's quite true that knives can be equally deadly in trained hands. However, it is easier for the uninitiated to kill with a gun than it is with a knife. Why should you be ashamed of what happened to you? It's the c*nt who attacked you who should feel shame!

I was wondering how long it would take before Charlie Heston, the doyen of the NRA (Nuts Ranting Always?) came into the conversation. He's an actor! A good actor perhaps, but nothing more. He plays 'make believe' in front of a camera. While he may have been good at pretending to be Moses and performing miracles, his make believe would all too sadly fail trying to bring those cold dead school kids back to life.

It is because guns are so prevalent in American society, that the police need to be armed

I really do not think this guy had current access to a computer. I think in his warped mind he foud a school that had easy access and could have been watching and maybe even walked around the school. I agree that the internet has made things easy for the predators to locate and find victims, but in this case I do not think it happened. Yes more needs to be done to protect everyone, kids to seniors, on the internet. But if you become a victim of it, you or your family should not be to blame. It is the person that did the crime, not the victim. We live in a society that has instant access to anything, road rage and it is ok to do what you want and it is all at high speed.

Skyrokhet, First I was not talking about the school shooting in Pennsylvania that is a different story all together, Yes the one in Pennsylvania is hard to predict and protect in that case, the one I am referring to is the one in Bailey, Colorado, Yes my heart goes out to Emily and her family, but as the news reports said and quote ?That this guy sexual abused the girls in that school? there is only two ways to get them girls one being the internet and searching for that school and it gives there school name and when the graduate from school, or second they can watch the girls and then follow them, but this is more risky then the internet and then sexual abuse them. But since the internet is easer and less risky to pick out victim and have the victim gain your/there trust and then meet, and then bang get them right were the predator wants them. This guy in the case of Bailey is sick in the head but it was easer access by computer, So if parents watch there child access and information on the net this can and maybe just stop this it not a guarantee at all, Butt?. How ever I not saying that is what he did it this way but you can?t rule it out either

Kindest Regards, TJ Kilburn

As my oldest daughter will turn 13 tomorrow, I grieve for the KEYES family and their loss . EMILY will NOT be forgotten. There needs to be a higher level of security in schools across America. How many innocent lives have to be taken before a more sophisticated form of security will be mandatory in schools??? KIKILALA submitted her opinion earlier, and she is so correct in that you can just walk into some schools and the lack of windows around entries is very common. Our middle school is very much the same. There need to be changes in accessing these schools. I will pray for some kind of positive change each and every day.

WITH OUR DEEPEST SYMPATHY. MAY OUR PRAYERS BE COMFORTING DURING THIS TIME. THE WILSON FAMILY

To Plymouth,

I would recommend that you watch the training video "Surviving Edged Weapons" by Caliber Press before you decide that I was somehow at less risk at the point of a knife than I would have been had the weapon used against me been a firearm instead. On reporting the crime,I was so ashamed and terrified by what was done to me that I never was able to tell my family what had taken place.I also know this: the emotional and spiritual scars are there for the rest of my life,no matter how much counselling has done for me.One thing about a knife-unlike a gun,it never has to be reloaded, and the victim is just as dead in the end. So,it is with the above in mind and what I stated in my other postings that I choose to carry a firearm, lawfully,to protect myself and others. As Mr. Charleton Heston said, "from my cold, dead hand" will my means of self-defense ever be relinquished; many law enforcement officers stand behind me on this issue.Sadly,it is sometimes because they have had a similar history.

TerranceKT: so it is blame the victim? It is the fault of the girls that got shot here and in PA? I doubt if any of the Amish girls even had access to a computer. The men, both in Bailey and in PA were warped. No one egged them on, they did it alone. Society, parents or who ever is not to blame. I really hate seeing our children during a time of growth and freedom being locked up, but that, no matter how safe your community is needs to be done. Who would have thought Bailey or an Amish community school would be attacked? They are small, everyone knows everyone and not a high risk. You would expect this in big cities, not the quiet country towns.

My first thoughts were sadness, then rage. I prayed for this girl Emily, my sister's namesake, the first time I've prayed consciously out loud in years. As the Keyes requested, I refrain from scorn, trying to think positive thoughts in this precious girl's memory. How sad that anyone could create a place inside that would let them do this. Doing so sadly separates them from God?s love and humanity. My hope is that a loving being can somehow forgive them. As for Emily, I truly believe that she is bathed in all the love a loving God has, now and forever.

My heart wrenching prayers go to the Keyes, Bailey and greater human community for this tragic loss.

Things like this do make me sick to the stomach and angry. That guy deserves to burn in hell and thats where he is. We must learn from this just like any war. What caused this man to do this? We must as a society show love and care to everyone. Our parents need to love their children and raise them correctly. Ill never forget things lyrics:

If everyone cared and nobody cried If everyone loved and nobody lied If everyone shared and swallowed their pride Then we'd see the day when nobody died

To those who knew Emily, do you know if she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior? That is the only way to heaven. We cannot enter by good works because everyone has sinned. Only through one pure sinless man who shed his blood out of love and grace can we receive the ultimate gift. (Salvation)To the Keyes family, I pray for you and ask you to ask God to give you strength and peace.

Caleb
