Join WLWT in celebrating the life Cincinnati's first lady of broadcasting. We invite you to share your memories: If you're over 50 and a Tri-state native, you watched the show or were even in the audience. And if you were a child who needed hospital care in the Tri-state sine 1939, or you have a child who did, you were touched by the Ruth Lyons Children's Fund. What kind of toy did you get?

Ruth was the Queen of talk long before Oprah came around. She was always able to get things going with anyone who came on her show! Johnny Bench, Pete Rose, Marge Schott, and many other sport giants came on her show weekly during the Big Red Machine build up. She was born on my Mother's birthday and either one of them could have run for mayor of their towns and won! Ruth and Bob Braun brought a lot of joy to our family over the years, and I will always be grateful that I have those memories to look back on! Thanks Ruth!

My great uncle, Joe Tonge, played in Cliff Lash's band for nearly 30 years, I'm told. Ruth Lyons was larger than life. Because she was larger than life; her sidekicks, Bob Braun and Nick Clooney...and in the earlier days, Peter Grant, were also larger than life. I'm not sure if anyone before or since has had the singluar impact on a region or on television (especially during that time)...than Mother.

My mother was a guest on Ruth's show back in the mid 60's. Her name was Jean Chapel and she did a song she recorded on Challenge Records titled "Help". Does anyone know how I could get a copy of this show or just that segment of it? It was great of Ruth to have invited her to the show. Many Thanks and Happy Birthday to Ruth!!

Whenever I hear Ruth Lyons' name I also think of my mom. We had all of the Ruth Lyons' Christmas albums and we would play them on the record player as we decorated the tree. It seems to me also that on a particular Sunday in December there was a special Ruth Lyons Christmas show that we would always watch. We also got tickets to go to her show. I was about 10 or 11 at the time. This brings back really good memories for me.

Ahh, Ruth Lyons, I remember her well. I was an avid fan and so were my children but the most avid, loyal fan Ruth ever had was my mother-in-law and her most staunch non-fan was my father-in-law. They, my in-laws, were from the old school where the husband commanded and the wife obeyed and usually she did, but in this instance, she rebeled when he demanded she turn the station when Ruth came on. This made him so mad he went to the front porch and stayed there, although it was in the dead of winter, until the Fifty-Fifty Club went off. She stayed warm and cozy inside watching the show. He never again demanded she turn it off but at noon each day, he took up his post on the front porch, periodically checking his watch, until the show was over. Ruth never knew the confrontation she had caused but I bet she would have cheered my mother-in law along.

I'm not over 50 but was 6 when Ruth Lyons left the 50-50 Club in 1969. My mom would watch each weekday and I'd watch, too. If anyone has the exact date of this show, I would like to know.
Two of Ruth's guests I remember were Jimmy Durante and Marty Allen. I was about 4 at the time and could not stand people having pies in their faces. During the show, Marty Allen picked up a pie and hit himself in the face with it. I thought it was disgusting. My mom has since told me that a woman in the audience had made the pie for Ruth, and Ruth was aghast over Marty spontaneously using her gift for his "gag."
Around the time I was born, my then 6 year old brother had to be in the hospital to remove his tonsils. He received a Tonka truck with green logs in it. After I grew older, I got to play with it, too.
When I was 11 my family left the Queen City area and I'm now in San Diego. It's nice to have a place here to reminisce!

Dear Miss Lyon's, my family and my self watched your TV show every day of the week during the 50's and 60's. We loved everything that you discussed, the music, the Christmas Fund, all of your staff, you guests, and particularly you. Your open personality, the sharing of your thoughts, and your total commitment to making this world a better place to live. Thanks again for allowing us all to be a part of your life!!!!!Thanks

Nostalgic memories here from a New Yorker who grew up in Cincinnati! Watching Ruth, Marian, Ruby, Peter, Cliff and Bob was like having a second family for us all!
Ruth Lyons was the ultimate professional and influenced me in many aspects of my life.
Sharing two things in common: my first name is also, Ruth, and I am a professional pianist here in New York.(Ruth was quite an accomplished pianist, as I recall).
I grew up watching the show as often as possible and was part of the audience a few times accompanied by my mother. What a wonderful show! What a wonderful lady! What a wonderful time in our country's history! The age of innocence, indeed!
Happy Birthday to the lady who personified class, wit, culture and good clean fun!

How lucky I was to be able to rush home for lunch when I was in grade school to see "Mother" during the week (at least part of her show), and I especially loved Christmas season. I was just into high school when Ruth retired--what a sad feeling to see such a big part of one's childhood drift away! The show, though still very good, was never, ever the same. We were so fortunate to have had such a great lady and wonderful entertainer in our midst. Happy Birthday, Miss Lyons, and my love to you, Herman and Candy. My memories will last forever.
Blessings, Joan Korber
