Is this a railroad spike? That's what a Madison woman believed it was when she donated it for the city's sesquicentennial time capsule but some say it's not. Do you know what it is?

Hey -- thanks for your comments! The woman who submitted the artifact said she was given her father's railroad items when he passed away. She was told it was a railroad spike. She kept it for sentimental reasons because he was a train engineer, so this is all very interesting to her.

We'll do a follow up to clear things up Thurs. on Live at 5.

I have done much construction in my life, lived on a farm and lived along an old railroad track and what was shown on the news was a chisel.

thks, krebsy

This looks like a chisel or cutter to me. The 'spike' or blade end appears to be wider than the shaft, which would not be true of a spike, and it appears to have a polished edge.

That is not a rail spike, it is a cold chisel. Rail spikes have a oval head that is offset to one side of the spike, and the shaft of the spike is square, not hexagonal
