CIESLEWICZ & FALK MUST COOPERATE ON TRANSIT
06/24/07
Of all the nuances in the complicated discussion of a modern, efficient and effective mass transit system for the greater Dane County region, the single greatest need right now is for a convincing, public and permanent pledge of cooperation between the city of Madison and Dane County. In other words Mayor Cieslewicz and County Executive Falk MUST end their disagreement, compromise, find common ground and work together on the ultimate goal ? a regional, multi-modal transit system.
All the evidence right now suggests the current commuter rail proposal should take the lead. It is more fully developed and ready to submit for federal funding. Future development of a street car component should be part of the plan. If, in a couple of years, no plan has won federal approval, street cars can lead. We don't care. But it is critical to start building public consensus and that can't happen until Cieslewicz and Falk set aside their differences and pledge to work together. Both will have to give up a little of what they want deep in their hearts. But we need them to lead?together?on this. And we need it now. We ask the Mayor and the County Executive to join together in this critical determinant of our future.
