A Maynard family is outraged after they said their daughter was forced to write a letter of apology for hugging a classmate. The parents said children should not be disciplined for being affectionate. The school said the child lifted her classmate off the ground.

I'd say this is one of those lonely American problems. Because the parents of the child think the child should be treated like a cat that doesn't like to be picked up isn't necessarily right either.

This is ridiculous! It was a hug... they are in Kindergarten! If there was touching of other parts, then there would be cause for concern, but my lord... it was a darn hug!

Also, what does it matter if the child allegedly picked the other child off the ground?????

Dumb!

Maybe if there was more hugging, there would be less shooting and fighting and really, school yard bullies really need to be hugged.

Sapien ? this is what set me off?. This statement:

(from you)?So in this particular example, the academic students were punished academically, and the athletic students were punished physically. I am pretty sure that in most situations where this type of scenario occurs, the athletes who you perceive as getting away with murder, are in fact getting theirs. If I were given the choice, I would much rather be suspended for 3 days.?

So then, maybe I mis-read it, but it appears as if you think it was okay to dish out two different punishments. By your latest post I can?t tell whether or not you agree with ?two different punishments? or not?. But I will assume you don?t. How could anyone think that the example you stated was actually ok- that would be silly!!!!

Eiff- thank you for being positive about schools. I had no problem reading your tone and I agree with everything you have said. Clearly you are smart! (ok sapien you are too!)

Good night good bye- we are the only ones left- and we are discussing something that does not even fit under this topic. Perhaps a board about education in general will come up ? and we will get to duke it out again!

Stay positive!

Eif77, "Flying off the handle" would be a good way to put it. Do either of you read the words, or are you interjecting a blend of your own personal, reactionary inner dialog with what I wrote? You both could use a day at the spa. Relax.

The examples I cited were just that, EXAMPLES! They did not happen at least not in my school system.

They were just possiblities of what could happen if standardized policies are not in place and followed.

I also find it ironic that just after thinker87 posts and tells us to play nice, you make a post that makes him/her go flying off the handle. Also I agree with thinker87's point. You do the same crime, you do the same punishment.

Thinker jeeze, now you're getting all wound up. Did you read what I said? I said, "bummer, we all know it happens." Then I recounted an incident that I remembered from when I was a kid, did I say that I agreed with it? My first statement to eif77, referring to treating them differently plainly stated "motivators," did you read that? Hello?
