Gov. Bob Ehrlich has lifted the moratorium on the death penalty in Maryland and an inmate has been selected to die in March. What is your opinion on the debate? Is the death penalty wrong or is it justice?

I agree with the death penalty, but I also feel the court should be held responsible. It seems the judges are allowing criminals to flood our streets and continue to give these people chance after chance. Once a person has committed a crime they should pay the penalty.

After reading others comments...I believe what comes goes around comes back around. If someone hurts anyone of my family members - they will have me to answer to. Forget about Laws!! As for the Dealth Penalty...we'll I believe that those who have suffered from criminals should have a right to hurt those criminals in their own way. Believe me...you don't want to mess with me!!

I was always for the death penalty but it is to good for most that deserve it. I would rather they stay in prison for life but see the system change, like if they want lights they would have to generate it. This would also serve as daily exersize. They would eat whatever there is a surplus of and water would be their drink. In other words take all those luxsurys away.

I support the death penalty, a friend of mine was beaten & left to die on a dirt road in Pa. His murderer has never been brought to justice. Mr Oken's letter to Gov Ehrlich was a thinly veiled attempt to induce sympathy for himself, not to protect society from future murderers. As far as his own family & friends being "victims" of his execution, I totally agree...but this was accomplished by Mr Oken the day he took his first victim's life, it is not the fault of the state for executing this "compassionate citizen". It is a sad note to today's society, but sometimes the world is made a slightly better place when people like Mr Oken are no longer in it. My greatest sympathy is right where it should be, with the surviving members & friends of Mr Oken's victims. Although you will never be the same people you were before these terrible crimes were inflicted upon you, maybe you can close one small chapter of this horrific experience...

I am all for the death penalty. I believe it takes to long for the process to happen. I know that there are laws that have to be followed but, it seems that the accuser has more rights then the victimes. Is that fair? Who cares if they feel pain through the whole process look what they do to there victimes.

I don't believe in the death penalty. I think the person should have to sit in jail the rest of their life and think about what they have down, God will take care of them in the end. The death penalty just gives them waht they want.

Everyone that agrees with the death penalty and believes in God should worry about their judgment when the time comes. Only God has the right to take a life not man. Especially someone who believes in the Son Of Man should ask for forgiveness. Yes murder is wrong but as mortal people we just don't have the authority to kill anyone either because of what they did. Only God can judge. I feel sorry for everyone that is involved in situations like this and I will continue to pray for the Murderers, the victims and the accusers. Killing this man did not bring back his victims or make their family's situation any better. I thought about what if this man killed someone I love. As a believer in God I can only leave it in God hands. We all have enough sins on ourselves as it is and we don't need anymore. "In God We Trust". Is this only about money?

May God have mercy on his soul. Finally the victims have won. It will not bring her back but he is now paying the ultimate price for his sins. I am really glad this is over and justice has prevailed once again.

I'm all for the Death Penalty here in Maryland. An Eye for an Eye. Why tie up jail or prison space and taxpayer money for an inmate that is waiting to be executed? Get the job done as soon as possible, and phooey on all those appeals that are a waste of time. Maryland needs to be tough when it comes to our death penalty. Let's do it right the first time and maybe the murder rate will come down a bit more. What if it was you family member? I'm all for the execution of another heinous crime done by a criminal.
Respectfully, Davem9427

I was relieved to read the breaking news that Oken was executed at 9:18 this evening. What I hope from this is that first and foremost that the families, who have endured a ridiculous number of years waiting for justice, the peace to attain closure for the henious acts that took away their loved ones. So many people say, "oh it's not right to kill someone just because they killed". I don't see any reason not to. Those beautiful women who were killed had every right to grow old and enjoy their lives. Why should he get to live? I was pleased to read that it was done. Hopefully now, future criminals who think they can 'get away with murder' in Maryland may not be so lucky. Give me a break about the cruel and unusual punishment. What about the cruel and unusual way those poor women lost their lives?
