The Baltimore City school system faces a $58 million budget deficit. In response, the Board of Education has furloughed school employees and issued budget cuts.
How would you solve the Baltimore City school system's million-dollar budget deficit?

ladydmw: I totally agree with you....That whole gang who were in chg during the downfall of our city schools should go....including the school board and Nancy Grasmick who by the way has plenty of contacts from her husband Grasmick....Lets get to the bottom of who stole all this money and prosecute who is at fault....Throwing money at the problem doesn"t help ....but I do agree if the state owe's the Baltimore Schools money, they should pay up as they are part of the problem. So is o'Malley...This was also on his watch......

I would make one person in charge that would report directly to the mayor and do away with the rest of the school board and turn them into teachers to help with the shortage of teacher at the same time

As a former MD'er and city resident it always amazed me how at every election there was a spot for voting more monies into the city school system. I look at ti this way, if you can use the state lotter for the stadium authority which generates millions for both ball parks, why not also designate some of the monies or add more scratch offs tickets to be put toward the city school budget instead of wanting to raise state taxes. Also, another way to help out both the state deficit and school deficit would be to pass slots and have 1/2 the monies towards schools and to the state.

The easy way out of the Baltimore City School's budget deficit is put a school tax in and people who have children(s) in school will pay for this. Make it a $500, for each child that they have in school. I know New York has this plan and I believe a couple other states do.
Also put back in the school uniforms, know parents would have to buy them but the money would go back into the school system. Why should everybody paid for the City's school problems. And keep raising the taxes here in Maryland.
Pretty soon you will see more and more people and business moving out of Maryland because of the high taxes we have to pay to bail out the school systems.
Thank you, Kim

Peach23 It is not the states job to pay for 40 years of bad politics in Baltimore City. And for your information the State was going to help your poorly run city but the hot head who runs the City(O'Malley) refused. So everyone stop whining and get out there and vote out all the dead wood. And I mean Democrats and Republicans. We are on the right track with this mess but Baltimore needs a REAL Leader not O'Malley.

Its a shame how once again no one is addressing the issue with the money(which was owed to the city schools) that the state was court ordered to give to back what was owed instead they want to make the business and elites in the county think that they would be loaning us money. Why should the city take a loan from the govenor when the state is a vital reason why the schools have no money. When Washington gives money to the states it is the responsibility of the Govenor to divide the money adequately, instead over the last few years both state officials have been finding loopholes to not give the city schools what they deserve, but can continue to build or add additions to schools in some of the wealthier counties- Not only should we be held responsible but so should the state.
The question even after the city-wide walk out was never answered by any politician-If the children are asking these questions where are the adults who should be answering them.
If the state owes the city school system any money then the state should give it to them without any strings instead of keeping it in their own pockets. The money from Washington went somewhere and if not in the city schools then where?
thanks. peach

It seems strange to me that the teachers, students and other school staff are the ones to suffer from this deficit, especially since they are not the ones who did the budget planning in the first place. I think the right thing to do would be either get rid of the ones in charge of planning now or cut their salaries in order to make up for this deficit. I say find people who know what they are doing when it comes to plan the budget. It's obvious that one people who are doing that now have NO CLUE what they are doing!

A good way to prevent some of the waste attributed to the school system would be to do exactly what was done in New York when faced with a similar situation; Immediately stop all direct deposits of paychecks. This would force one to appear in person to collect their salary. In New York tens of millions were saved.

Peach I have to disagree, True my kids are no better than yours I never said that. However this is a long term problem that began BEFORE Gov Eurlich took office. I hope you educate yourself about the financial problems of Baltimore that has been going on for 20 years or more of oppressive Demcocrats in office. It is just lucky for us the businsess owners of Maryland that we finaly have a real state leader who is going to get us out of this financial mess. I do not think it is fair to raise your taxes or my taxes to pay for all the fat cats in Baltimore politics. If I were you I would look at what is happening with all this surplus money we had 8 years ago when your beloved Democrats ran the state.
