This is a forum for Duke City residents (or former residents) to meet, make friends, exchange ideas, share information, and tell others (and KOAT!) about what's happening. Talk about what matters to YOU for Albuquerque. If there isn't already a specific forum for an Albuquerque news topic, then talk about it here.

Hoffmantown & The Four Story Nursing Home Hoffmantown is trying to sell land to a developer, but it needs to be rezoned. They own the land, but it isn't currently designated to be a nursing home. The EPC for the City of Albuquerque will have a hearing on October 16th. The neighborhood is staunchly opposed--increased traffic, decreased property values, 300 new neighbors staring down from a four-story bedroom in our backyards. This proposed building will be as big as the Hilton Garden Inn at I25 & San Antonio, but will be across the street from homes instead of businesses. Community feelings can be seen at youtube.com/rodneygamble.

Mowing down the Parks
I live in Taylor Ranch, and make good use of the walking path around the Mariposa Park.
Recently the city has come through and mowed down most of the shrubbery. As a result, gone are most of the birds, and the rabbits, all that is left now is dirt and dust blowing.
When the rains come, the sides of the walking path are going to erode as they have done in different places already. Then the City will have to haul in dirt or blacktop the eroded places.
I don't get it sometimes...when is dirt more appealing than something that grows natively and does not need any care?

Yes, I too have received a red light ticket - legitimately! I think for the most part, the cameras are good to have - I've seen a noticable change in the way people drive at these intersections. What I wanted to comment on is the fact that the Governor wants to take these funds away from the city of Albuquerque. This is our city, the citizens here are paying these fines, and it's only right that our money stays in programs for the betterment of our city - not the rest of the state! Richardson should be careful about the manner in which he seizes control over our programs if he wants to keep a reputable favor with Albuqueruque citizens.

The problem is that you are probably in the fast lane when they flip you off..

I am 62 years old and have not received any traffic citations in at least 15 years. I drive the old pickup that everyone just has to pass, and they sometimes give me the one-finger salute!
However, I sometimes find myself going 45 MPH in a 40 MPH zone because I am trying to keep up with the traffic, or at least trying to avoid being a hinderance.
My point is that we all speed occasionally and should be careful about labelling those who do get caught by the red-light cameras. If you never exceed the speed limit, don't tell anyone cause that accomplishment just makes you the most boring and bland person in the country.

Question: Richardson swore he loved New Mexico so much, so any bets on whether he will leave the state after his term as Governor expires?
I have always felt he has just been using NM to launch himself into the national spotlight.

THE RED LIGHT CAMERAS!!
We are somewhat new to Albuquerque. On 9/19/07 I received a RED LIGHT TICKET for "speeding," at the intersection of Carlisle & Montgomery. The speed limit is 35mph in that area and I was driving at 37mph. The ticket I received in the mail states 40mph. Does the city round to the nearest 10th? What about those who run the red light? I travel this area 4 nights a week around 3:30am to take my husband to work. Every night there is someone who runs the red light. No flashes. No police. No ticket. Is it only for speeders? All of us at one time or another, go over the speed limit, under the speed limit, by 2mph or too much mph. We are penalized for 2mph? Shouldn't the ticket reflect accurate speed and not round up? I have only received 1 other prior ticket as a driver since I was 16 years old, that was for speeding back in 1996, I was driving fast!! I certainly deserved it. Since moving here from Michigan in 2005, on a daily basis, we observe drivers who drive very fast, switch lanes with no signal and cut in front of each other. Where are the tickets for that? And the city is worried about my driving 2 mph over the speed limit and threaten to apprehend my vehicle if I don't pay the fine? With all the discussions that have been coming to the table, and our city council and mayor are trying to decide whether to keep this red light system, do I pay it or not? Will this and does this system really make a difference? A few intersections have been chosen for this program, are they going to put one at every signal light in the city to reduce speeding? Come on City of Albuquerque, we are spinning are wheels here!!!

I don't understand the people of Albuquerque! What can possibly be wrong with a program that tries to change behavior, make people more compliant with our traffic laws, save lives and prevent injury, and create some revenue for our city? Hooray for Mayor Chavez and shame on the two councilman who voted to end the Red Light Camera Program. Have they forgotten that these people who are complaining about the fines are breaking the law and, if we had a big enough police force, they would still be ticketed. In my opinion, it is insanity to even think about ending a program because it is catching too many law breakers. TOO BAD FOR THOSE WHO GET CAUGHT. DON'T LIKE PAYING FINES? LEARN TO STOP ON ORANGE AND RED.

I SAW YOUR COVERAGE / INVESTIGATION REGARDING THE DECIBEL LEVEL OF THE RAILRUNNER WARNING HORN. I PERSONALLY FEEL THAT YOUR STORY WAS EXTREMELY ONE-SIDED, BECAUSE YOU NEGLECTED TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE EFFECT THAT INCREASING THE DECIBELS ON THE HORN W0ULD HAVE ON PEOPLE WHOSE HOMES (AS IS OURS), ARE LOCATED NEXT TO THE TRACKS, AND NEAR A CROSSING. THIS NOISE IS ALREADY SO LOUD AND OCCURS SO OFTEN EACH DAY, THAT ITS DIFFICULT TO SIT IN YOUR OWN YARD AS IT PASSES. IF IT WAS ONE BIT LOUDER I THINK IT WOULD BE COMPLETELY INTOLERABLE. HAVING BEEN RAISED IN VALENCIA COUNTY I AM EXTREMELY FAMILIAR WITH THE CROSSING WHERE THE ACCIDENT OCCURED LAST WEEK. I COMPLETELY AGREE WIH THE RAILRUNNER OFFICIALS THAT ANYONE CROSSING A RAILROAD TRACK HAS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF BEING SURE THAT IT IS CLEAR BOTH WAYS BEFORE DOING SO. IT IS ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS TO INSINUATE THAT THIS RESPONSIBILTY LIES ANYWHERE ELSE. IT IS THE DRIVERS RESPONSIBILITY, WITHOUT DOUBT. MANY MANY PEOPLE IN THIS STATE CROSS MANY TRACKS EVERYDAY, EVEN SEVERAL TIMES A DAY, AND THIS UNFORTUNATE EVENT IS CERTAINLY THE RARE EXCEPTION OF A DISTRACTED DRIVER. ALTHOUGH I DETEST THE NOISE, AND OUR HOME HAS BEEN HERE SINCE 1948, LONG BEFORE THIS NOISY RAILRUNNER I FELT YOUR STORY WAS UNJUST AND COULD HAVE BEEN PRESENTED WITH A MUCH MORE PRODUCTIVE MESSAGE. INSTEAD OF EMPHASIZING AND IMPRESSING THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING AN AWARE AND CAREFUL DRIVER, THE STORY JUST TRIED TO PLACE BLAME IN THE LAST PLACE IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN. THIS KIND OF REPORTING IS A SHAME AND DOES AN INJUSTICE TO YOUR STATION AND YOUR VIEWERS.
